Robert W. Neumar, MD, PhDMember-at-Large / Professor and Chair of Emergency Medicine

Robert Neumar, MD, PhD, serves as the Professor and Chair of Emergency Medicine at the University of Michigan. With over three decades of research experience in cardiac arrest resuscitation, he has been a mentor to a multitude of medical students, doctoral candidates, post-doctoral fellows, and NIH K-award recipients. A leading advocate for federally funded research in emergency care, Dr. Neumar was named the inaugural Co-Chair of the ACEP/SAEM Task Force on Emergency Care Research in 2007. This task force played a pivotal role in organizing the 2009 NIH Roundtables on Emergency Care Research, establishing the first-ever NIH K12 program dedicated to emergency care research in 2011, and founding the NIH Office of Emergency Care Research, also in 2011.
Previously, Dr. Neumar led the ACEP Research Committee, the Scientific Review Committee, and the Research Section. Currently, he co-chairs the Research Workgroup of the Association of Academic Chairs in Emergency Medicine (AACEM), spearheading the development of the 2030 Strategic Goals for Emergency Medicine Research. His contributions to the field have been recognized through numerous accolades, including the 2007 ACEP Award for Outstanding Contribution in Research, the 2020 SAEM John Marx Leadership Award, and his 2015 election to the prestigious National Academy of Medicine.

Nancy Ewen Wang, MD, is an Emeritus Professor of emergency medicine (EM) and pediatrics at Stanford University, where she served as Associate Director of Pediatric EM for over 20 years. She is dedicated to addressing health disparities and founded Stanford's Social EM section to identify and address patients' social needs through the emergency department. Her work extends globally, having trained and collaborated with medical professionals in Mexico, Indonesia, and Ecuador. She researches disparities in specialty care access, trauma, and mental health, while also advocating for unaccompanied immigrant children through community partnerships and policy efforts. Currently, Dr. Wang serves as the Faculty Director of the REACH MD/MS Program in health equity research at Stanford.

Willard A. Sharp, MD, PhDResearch Learning Series Panelist

Willard W. Sharp M.D., PhD. is an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine, Section of Emergency Medicine at the University of Chicago. Dr. Sharp runs an NIH funded basic science laboratory investigating the role of mitochondrial injury and metabolism in cellular injury following cardiac arrest. Recent work has focused on the role of mitochondrial fission and fusion in mediating injury and outcomes in a murine model of cardiac arrest.
Dr. Sharp received his undergraduate degree in biology and history at Wofford College in South Carolina before pursuing his PhD at the University of South Carolina in Biomedical Science. He completed NIH funded post-doctoral work at the University of Illinois at Chicago followed by his MD degree at the University of South Carolina. During his medical training he received a Rotary International Fellowship to spend a year at the John Radcliffe Hospital and Oxford University studying gene therapy. He then completed residency training in Emergency Medicine at the University of Michigan before obtaining a faculty appointment at the University of Chicago.
Dr. Sharp has experience in mentoring pre-doctoral, post-doctoral, residents, and junior faculty and is interested in encouraging young EM trainees to pursue research in basic science. He is co-founder of an unofficial SAEM basic science and translational science interest group for EM trainees and physicians and is a member of the SAEM and ACEP research committees
