Biography
Robert W. Neumar, MD, PhD, is professor and chair of emergency medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School and professor of molecular and integrative physiology. He is affiliated with the Max Harry Weil Institute for Critical Care Research and Innovation and the Extracorporeal Life Support Laboratory.
Dr. Neumar earned his Doctor of Medicine and Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and completed his emergency medicine residency at UPMC Medical Education.
His research focuses on cardiac arrest resuscitation, including the molecular mechanisms of brain injury and strategies to improve neurologic outcomes. He has also studied extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation as a rescue strategy for refractory cardiac arrest. He has authored more than 75 publications and held leadership roles with the American Heart Association, including chair of the Emergency Cardiovascular Care Committee.
Dr. Neumar has received national recognition for his research contributions and currently co-chairs the research workgroup of the Association of Academic Chairs in Emergency Medicine (AACEM), supporting development of strategic priorities for emergency medicine research. His work also includes global health initiatives to improve access to emergency care in low-resource settings.
