What Are You Doing After Graduation? Insights From the 2023 American Board of Emergency Medicine In-Training Examination on Career Plans of Emergency Medicine Residents (Workforce Committee-Sponsored)
The SAEM Workforce Committee, in collaboration with the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM), conducted a survey of over 9,500 emergency medicine residents across the United States to explore their career plans and the factors influencing those plans. This study, conducted in conjunction with the 2023 ABEM in-training examination, gathered insights on topics such as fellowship intentions, career setting preferences, and factors like lifestyle, salary, debt, geography, burnout, and expected years in clinical practice. Key findings highlight significant shifts in the career trajectories of residents, particularly in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. This session will begin with a presentation of these key findings, followed by a panel discussion with study investigators and experts in the field. The panel will explore lessons learned and implications for the future emergency medicine workforce, with a focus on how evolving trends may impact residency and clinical practice long-term.
Learning Objectives:
- Discuss the career plans of US EM residents and the factors influencing these plans
- Discuss how the pandemic, EM workforce projections, and recent match results shaped residents' career choices
- Discuss lessons learned on the future of the EM workforce through the lens of a current cohort of EM residents
