The Emergency Medicine Match: How We Got Here and Where We Go Next (CDEM Sponsored)

The last three Match cycles have been consequential for EM. Residency applicants are not choosing to apply to EM at nearly the same rate as they were just 5 years ago, leaving many programs unfilled. There have been many speculations as to how EM ended up in its current situation. As such, the EM Match Task Force has surveyed EM applicants to gain a better understanding of medical student perspectives.

This session will cover applicant perspectives on EM, the factors influencing the recent Matches, and insights on applicant decision making behavior. Our expert panel will then discuss important conclusions and insights that we can take from applicant input. Finally, the panel will offer possible strategies to consider going forward and elicit audience input and questions. The audience will understand factors important to residency applicants which have contributed to recent Match results in EM. The audience will consider potential strategies for the EM Match in future years. The audience will identify important factors of EM that have had an adverse effect on applicant behavior.
