Can You See and Hear Me? Building a Training Program to Develop Association of American Medical Colleges Telemedicine Competencies

This presentation will describe the methodology for our telemedicine teaching system — a hybrid technique that incorporates asynchronous training using online self-paced learning modules and simulation training with small group debriefing. Secondary content will be a description of the material that we convey during these sessions. This material falls into domains consistent with the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) core competencies. These domains include 1.) patient safety and appropriate use: proposed benefit, models of care, patient access and escalation pathways; 2.) communication: methods of self-presentation, patient interaction and evaluation, and care planning specific to telemedicine; 3.) ethical and medicolegal considerations: awareness of privacy and legal considerations and consent, ethical and access issues, and importance of protecting patient interests in an expanding field.
