SAEM Federal Funding Committee
SAEM is excited to announce the establishment of a new Federal Funding Committee, a significant step forward in reinforcing our core pillar of research and in supporting and advancing initiatives that benefit our academic emergency medicine community.
This committee will focus on building strong, strategic relationships with every federal funding agency and organization, engaging directly with agency representatives, and promoting specific funding opportunities, programs, and resources for our members. It will also serve as a vital communication bridge between SAEM and federal agencies, helping to keep our community informed about important policy updates, new funding mechanisms, and evolving priorities in research.
Committee applications closed June 15, 2025.
Committee Requirements
- You must have received federal grant funding.
- You must be a member in good standing.
- You must maintain your membership status during your committee term.
After the committee members are finalized by the SAEM Board of Directors, the term of service for the initial year of this committee will begin immediately in July 2025. The term will end at SAEM26 in May with the opportunity to renew for additional terms.
Committee Objectives
- Develop a targeted, year-long SAEM engagement strategy with each federal funding agency.
- Create and publish an annual engagement agenda for each targeted federal agency, with clear goals and timelines for outreach, communication, and collaboration.
- Initiate and cultivate relationships with key contacts at relevant federal funding agencies. Hold relationship-building calls with each agency two-three times per year, including SAEM Board members as appropriate.
- Serve as a conduit between federal agencies and SAEM members to disseminate timely funding opportunities, policy updates, and agency announcements.
- Identify and advocate for specific funding mechanisms or program announcements that support emergency medicine research.
- Provide feedback to federal agencies on current funding gaps and opportunities relevant to the field.
- Support the AACEM Research Committee on achieving the 2030 goals.
- Collaborate with the SAEM Research Committee to support junior investigators in pursuing federal funding (example: agency-specific guidance, mentorship, webinars).
- Refer RFIs to the SAEM Research Committee for draft response.
- Report to the SAEM Board of Directors twice per year. Track and report committee outcomes annually, including agency engagement milestones, new funding opportunities disseminated, and investigator success stories. Use these metrics to refine future engagement strategies and better meet member needs.
