RAMS Roadmaps-Senior Med Student

Your goal as a senior medical student is to choose a residency based on the aspects of the program that appeal to you (e.g., time on service, available electives, level of trauma, etc.), and not on what fellowship you wish to complete after. If you plan to attend a program that does not have a wilderness medicine elective, be sure that you will have the opportunity to complete an away elective at a residency that does provide it. When considering a career in wilderness medicine or any other field, think about what you are passionate about and what you find fulfilling.

Additional Recommendations

  • Maintain and develop new outdoor passions.
  • Join wilderness medicine interest groups to learn from others why they pursue wilderness medicine and their mistakes/successes.
  • Longitudinal participation in community outreach and underserved populations.
  • Volunteer in free community clinics.
  • Educational opportunities for both teaching and learning (i.e., AWLS).
  • Find something you are passionate about and find opportunities to share that passion to show your interest in academics.
  • International experiences can be helpful but are not necessary.
  • The main priority should be the development of clinical knowledge and excellent bedside manner.
  • Wilderness medicine rotation was voted one of the most valuable rotations to complete, and is a great way to think independently as it is skills- and scenario-based training.
  • Three-year vs. four-year programs: not as important when applying for wilderness medicine fellowships, though a four-year program can help in the development of a strong academic background.
