SAEM Simulation Academy Virtual Mentoring/Faculty Development Hour: Branching Out in Simulation Beyond High Fidelity and Procedure Simulation

Interactive virtual mentoring hour sponsored by the SAEM Simulation Academy Faculty Development Subcommittee focused on areas of simulation outside of high fidelity and procedure-based simulation. Panelists discussed a variety of niches within simulation and offered unique insights into simulation areas such as telesimulation, EMS/disaster simulation, community/CME simulations at non-academic centers, virtual reality uses, sim with standardized patients, and many other innovative areas.

I love simulation and I love the Simulation Academy, I will be the first to openly admit it. I’m running for President-elect because it would be an honor to lead the Simulation Academy Executive Committee and continue the many important initiatives underway from the Academy plus initiate so many new ones. I love simulation and collaborating and the Simulation Academy is such an important hub for our EM Simulation community. I have been a member of the Simulation Academy throughout my time as a simulation educator and served on the Executive Committee 2019-2021 as member at large and secretary and I am the current (2021-2022) Sim Academy Secretary. I am running for President-Elect at this time because I feel ready to continue and expand the amazing work being done by the Academy. With my previous experience on the Exec Committee and multiple subcommittees, I believe I have a solid understanding of the Simulation Academy goals, vision, and structure. I firmly believe I can continue to grow and develop the Sim Academy and that I am well suited to the role with my organizational and collaboration skills. Additionally, I am the co-chair of the Sim Academy Faculty Development Committee and have helped spearhead the virtual simulation mentoring and faculty development series of panels held over the last 2 years (thank you again to all of our excellent panelists). I am also an active member and collaborator in the Sim Academy Research Committee, directing multiple initiatives aimed at helping to quantify our needs as simulation educators and propose a call to action and way forward towards increased resource for our members (e.g. simulation research barriers, novel task trainer models). It has been an honor to serve on the Sim Academy Executive Committee and network and collaborate to support so many of our members, loop in members, and encourage new members to become more active. I believe together through collaboration and innovation that we all grow, and importantly, the Sim Academy grows. I hope to continue to accomplish all of what I’ve started and endeavor to expand and start new initiatives within the Academy. I look forward to working to understand and help meet the evolving needs of our members and vow to work with the Exec Committee and our membership to continue to do more for our members and the Academy.

    Rush University Medical Center

Dr. Hock is an assistant professor at Rush University Medical Center and the director for emergency medicine simulation. She completed residency at the University of Chicago and fellowship at the Rush/Cook County Simulation Fellowship program. She is currently the fellowship director of the Rush Emergency Medicine Simulation Fellowship and is a faculty lead for medical student simulation at Rush Medical College. She has a strong track record in her four years of service within the SAEM Simulation academy executive board, including two years as a member-at-large followed by two terms as treasurer. Dr. Hock has helped manage the simulation academy budget through the pandemic and co-organized multiple virtual and in-person mentor hours. She is an active member of the research, education, and faculty development subcommittees. She is excited to be running for president-elect and to continue the excellent work that has been ongoing in the Simulation Academy over the past few years. As president, she hopes to continue to strengthen member engagement through support of virtual events and education; increase broad membership involvement and notifications about committee and research collaboration opportunities, and improve communication with fellowship programs to increase fellow visibility and resources, strengthening the Simulation Academy member base.

    University of Wisconsin

I completed medical school at University of Maryland and Emergency Medicine Residency at the University of Chicago. I completed my simulation fellowship at Rush/Cook County and have been Medical Director of Simulation at University of Wisconsin since 2020. I am the fellowship director as well and now have taken over Faculty and APP maintenance of credentialing. I have been a member at large of the SAEM Sim Academy for the last 1.5 years and a part of the education subcommittee. Have also started becoming more involved with AWAEM as the simulation liaison and hoping to continue to build that relationship. Have been able to be involved and learn about the inner workings of the Sim Academy, have been able to collaborate with many members of the Sim Academy as well as have built relationships with simulationists nationally.. Hoping to continue to push forward the agenda of collaboration and projects, especially engaging new resident and fellow members. Hoping to increase awareness of the academy and membership, as well as facilitate more collaboration nationally. Would love to continue to build the network of simulationists, not only for projects but also for mentorship. Have started to do some work with simulation in the realm of DEI and would hope to continue to collaborate with ADIEM in this working group that has been formed.
