Measuring the Impact of Cuts to USAID on Mortality in Democratic Republic of Congo

Join us for a webinar exploring the life-or-death impact of recent cuts to global health funding in the Democratic Republic of Congo, one of the world's most challenging humanitarian crises. In this session, sponsored by the Global Emergency Medicine Academy (GEMA) Humanitarian Task Force, speaker Les Roberts will draw on his recent mortality survey in Eastern DRC to discuss how emergency physicians and trainees can study the impact of funding cuts on essential health services in humanitarian settings.

Moderators and Speakers:
  • Charlotte Roy, MD, MPH, is an Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at the University of Southern California. She completed a fellowship in Global Emergency Medicine at Columbia University and has worked for Doctors Without Borders in Ethiopia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the Central African Republic.
  • Les Roberts, PhD, is a Professor Emeritus at Columbia University and has taken part in the field measurement of mortality in crises, including: Rwanda 1994, more than 30 health zones in the Democratic Republic of Congo 1999-2002, Iraq 2004, Zimbabwe 2007, the Central African Republic 2009, 2018, and 2022, and Sierra Leone 2000 and 2014. He was an EIS Officer in the CDC's Refugee Health Activity and was later the Director of Health Policy at the International Rescue Committee.

    Charlotte Roy is an Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at the Keck School of Medicine of USC. She completed a fellowship in Global Emergency Medicine and earned her MPH at Columbia University. She did her residency in Emergency Medicine at the University of Chicago. She has worked with Doctors Without Borders in Ethiopia, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Central African Republic. She also supports the emergency medicine residency program in Rwanda. She is developing an ultrasound training curriculum for physicians in Burundi using a training of trainers model.
