Beyond the Binary: Physician and Pharmacy Perspectives on Caring for Transgender Patient

This webinar, co-sponsored by the Academy of Emergency Medicine Pharmacists (AEMP), the SAEM Sex and Gender in Emergency Medicine (SGEM) Interest Group, and the Academy for Diversity and Inclusion in Emergency Medicine (ADIEM) LGBTQ+ Committee, discussed the delivery of emergency care for transgender and gender diverse patients presenting to the emergency department.

Learning Objectives

At the completion of this activity, the pharmacist will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate inclusive communication practices and strategies when caring for transgender and gender diverse patients in the emergency department.
  2. Describe the principles of gender-affirming hormone therapy including common regimens, monitoring parameters, and potential adverse effects relevant to emergency department care.
  3. Apply clinical knowledge to optimize medication-related decision-making for transgender patients in the emergency department, including interpretation of laboratory values, identification of drug interactions, and management of acute complications.
