SAEM MedEd Showcase: Educational Advances in the Digital Era
This session reflects the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine’s commitment to community, mentorship, and innovation in medical education. The session will showcase free, high-impact resources and creative educational approaches using technology to enhance the reach and accessibility of medical education in emergency medicine and beyond. By leveraging digital platforms, these educational tools transform how learners access, engage with, and contribute to medical knowledge while promoting collaboration among educators and learners. This growing emphasis is increasingly seen as a key element of academic career development. Building on the success of previous #FOAMed Showcases, four presenters will pitch their innovative educational advances in 5-6 minutes. A panel of MedEd and FOAMed experts will offer live feedback, while the audience votes in real-time. The final winner will be determined by judges’ scores, audience votes, and social media engagement, with the results announced the following week via SAEM’s platforms. This session provides a unique opportunity to highlight groundbreaking educational approaches

Lauren R. McCafferty, MD

Dr. Lauren McCafferty is an Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine, Assistant Residency Director, and Ultrasound Education Director for the Department of Emergency Medicine at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center. She received her medical degree at the University of Kentucky and completed her emergency medicine residency training followed by an emergency ultrasound fellowship at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center. Her academic interests include ultrasound education and quality assurance, curricular innovations, and social media in medical education.

Carl Preiksaitis, MD

Dr. Carl Preiksaitis is a Medical Education Fellow and Clinical Instructor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Stanford University. Dr. Preiksaitis completed his medical training at New York University School of Medicine and a residency in emergency medicine at Stanford. His scholarly interests include digital technology and medical education, reproductive healthcare in the emergency department, and healthcare innovation. He is currently pursuing a master’s degree in medical education at the University of Cincinnati.

Aalap Shah, MD
Medical University of South Carolina
Aalap Shah, MD is currently an Assistant Professor at Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in Charleston, SC. He curently serves as the Director of the Emergency Ultrasound Fellowship and as Core Faculty for the Emergency Medicine Residency. He also serves on the SAEM-AEUS digital/social media committee, as well as SAEM Education and Virtual Presence committees. He is editor-in-chief of the ultrasound education website HolyCitySono.com and has been a regular contributor to FOAMed previously via ACEP, and various other independent websites. He previously completed his Emergency Ultrasound fellowship at MUSC, his Emergency Medicine residency at the University of Cincinnati, and completed Medical School at SUNY-Downstate.

Ali Raja, MD, MBA, MPH, FACHE
Massachusetts General Hospital
Ali S. Raja, MD, DBA, MPH, FACHE is the Deputy Chair and the Mooney-Reed Endowed Chair in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital, as well as a Professor of Emergency Medicine and Radiology at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Raja received his MPH from Harvard, MD and MBA degrees from Duke, and DBA from Case Western. After training in emergency medicine at the University of Cincinnati, he completed a research fellowship at Brigham and Women's Hospital. He is board-certified in both emergency medicine and clinical informatics.
A practicing emergency physician and author of over 250 publications, his research focuses on improving the appropriateness of resource utilization in emergency medicine. He serves as President-Elect of the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine, President of the Massachusetts Chapter of the American College of Healthcare Executives, and also sits on the boards of both Boston MedFlight and the Spaulding Rehabilitation Network.
Dr. Raja is also an expert on the management of critically ill patients in the emergency department and prehospital arenas. He has served as a critical care air transport team commander for the US Air Force, a civilian flight physician, a tactical physician for a number of local, state, and federal agencies, and a physician with MA-1 DMAT. -
Jeffery Hill, MD, MEd

I am an Associate Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Cincinnati. I graduated residency training at the University of Cincinnati in 2012 and thereafter completed a 2 year Masters of Medical Education through the University of Cincinnati. I have been involved in residency leadership since the completion of my fellowship training with a particular focus on resident bedside teaching in boarded EDs, residency didactics, teaching residents to be teachers, and asynchronous/technology facilitated educational interventions. My scholarly work is focused in these content areas as well with original publications on the development and validation of a lecture assessment tool, using Slack to facilitate virtual small group discussions, and survey-based research best practices. In our Deparment I also serve as the chair of our Education Leadership Academy, the goal of which is to teach residents the management principles and skills necessary to be leaders in Emergency Medicine education. -

Dr. Michael A. Gisondi is professor and the inaugural Vice Chair of Education in the Department of Emergency Medicine and Assistant Dean for Academic Advising at Stanford School of Medicine. He is the Principal and co-founder of The Precision Education and Assessment Research Lab (The PEARL). Dr. Gisondi is the recipient of numerous teaching awards including the Hal Jayne Excellence in Education Award from SAEM.

Dr. William Mehring, MD, MBA, is an Emergency Medicine Resident Physician at Stanford Health Care. He earned his Doctor of Medicine from the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California and his Master of Business Administration from USC Marshall School of Business.
Dr. Mehring’s work sits at the intersection of clinical care, digital health, and innovation. He is particularly interested in the role of technology in transforming healthcare delivery and medical education, with ongoing work in digital health solutions, medical education innovation, and early-stage venture development. -
Christopher J. Nash, MD, MEd

Christopher J. Nash, MD, MEd, is an assistant professor and core faculty in the department of emergency medicine (EM) at Duke University. He completed a fellowship in medical education at Mass General and pursued additional training through the SAEM ARMED MedEd program. He previously served as a Fellow Editor-in-Training for AEM Education & Training and is currently a fellow in the NBME SEEF program. His work focuses on the intersection of technology, education, and innovation, leveraging AI, simulation, and emerging digital tools to enhance clinical training and assessment. He leads several innovative research initiatives that bridge academic theory with frontline practice.

Dr. Milam grew up and attended medical school in Indiana at IU School of Medicine, where she went to Kenya for two months as a student, solidifying her interst in Global Health. She went to residency at Carolinas Medical Center follow by a fellowship in Global Emergency Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina, where she is now faculty and part of the divison of Global EM. Her focuses include educaiton and capacity building.
