Building the Pipeline: Identifying Best Practices in Developing and Advancing Women in Academic Emergency Medicine (AWAEM and Faculty Development Committee)
Building the Pipeline: Identifying Best Practices in Developing and Advancing Women in Academic Emergency Medicine” is an interactive didactic session utilizing a panel of leaders in the field of emergency medicine. The goal of the didactic is to highlight career paths of women leaders in academic emergency medicine to encourage and support women faculty in the pursuit of leadership roles and highlight the influence of the organizational culture on their career paths. Despite experiencing expanded women leadership in academic emergency medicine, recent research shows that almost 40% of women physicians chose to leave medicine or transition to part-time within six years of completion of their residency training. The expert panel will discuss their individual pathways towards leadership, provide advice on how to gain requisite leadership skills and experiences to support leadership development, and the role of female leaders in developing mentorship and institutional cultures supportive of women in clinical academic medicine. The panel will discuss the impact of departmental and institutional culture on gender inequities in compensation and promotion. The didactic will allow audience participation through an interactive Q&A session from the expert panel throughout the entire session.
