Annual Emergency Medicine Benchmark Survey (AAAEM-Sponsored)

The Annual Emergency Medicine Benchmark Survey, conducted by the Academy of Administrators in Academic Emergency Medicine (AAAEM) in partnership with the Academic Chairs of Emergency Medicine (AACEM), offers key insights into the state of academic emergency medicine departments nationwide. The survey sets benchmark standards for salaries, clinical operations, research, and education. This session will present findings from the latest operational benchmark survey, providing an updated view of emergency department workflows and operational characteristics. Attendees will learn about successes and challenges in maintaining efficient, patient-centered emergency department operations.

    The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center

    Greg Archual received his Bachelor of Science in Industrial Management from the University of Akron in 1983 and received his MBA from Ashland University in 1987. Greg also received his Lean/Six Sigma Black Belt certification from Kent State University in 2006.

    Greg’s work history includes both manufacturing and healthcare sectors, working for eleven years as an industrial/management engineer with a focus on process improvement and systems engineering. His work experience also includes thirteen years managing an emergency department of a level one trauma center and fifteen years of academic emergency medicine practice management. He is currently Chief Operating Officer and Administrator of the Department of Emergency Medicine at The Ohio State University where he is responsible for the strategic, financial, and operational success of the department’s three missions: clinical, education, and research. Greg is responsible for all operations of the Emergency Medicine department which include: two emergency departments, four advanced urgent cares, an immediate care center, hyperbaric medicine, two clinical decision units, and a Physician Advisor Program. He has served as President of AAAEM and is currently Co-Chair of the Benchmark Committee.

    Alyssa Tyransky, MTDA is a data analyst with The Ohio State University and the Benchmarking Surveys and Data Analytics Manager for the Academy of Administrators in Academic Emergency Medicine. Alyssa received her Bachelor's of Science in Biology from The Ohio State University in 2018 and her Masters in Translational Data Analytics from The Ohio State University in 2023.

    Alyssa's time at The Ohio State Univesity has focused primarily on faculty productivity scorecards, operational data in the emergency department, and billing and coding. She has also been invovled with the residency program, undergraduate medical education, research, and APP recruitment. Through her time with the benchmarking surveys, the surveys have seen their highest participation among individual departments and institutions in the history of the surveys.

    Kain C. Robbins is the Operations Director for the Department of Emergency Medicine at Milton S. Hershey Medical Center (MSHMC) of Penn State Health. Kain received his bachelor’s degree in 1994 in Accounting for Penn State University. He has been in the healthcare industry for 19 years starting out as the Accounting Manager for a Health Management Associates hospital in Lancaster, PA. For the 14 years he has been working at the MSHMC with the first 6 years in the role of a Financial Liaison which support the Children’s Hospital and the Departments of Pediatrics, Psychiatry, Neurosurgery, Neurology & PM&R and now the last 8 years with the Department of Emergency Medicine. In his role as Operations Director he not only manages the operations of Emergency Medicine but also directs the organization’s pre-hospital services, Life Lion, which operate air medical, ground critical care and EMS programs. Kain resides in Lancaster, PA and has been married to his wife, Kimberly, for 23 years. They are in the process of raising the next round of Nittany Lions with his daughter, Katelyn, currently a sophomore at University Park. His Son, Kyle, attends State College. In his free time, Kain is a passionate Dallas Cowboys fan. He also enjoys camping, traveling, and is always up for a good meal.

    Steve Maxwell, MSM

    University of Michigan Emergency Medicine

    Steve Maxwell is the chief administrator for the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Michigan.

    He has administrative responsibility for the research, education and clinical missions for Emergency Medicine including the Survival Flight Program.

    He joined the Department of Emergency Medicine in 2014 after previously serving in the Frankel Cardiovascular Center and as the administrator for the Section of General Surgery.

    Among his achievements, he played a role in developing the research infrastructure to support the #1 NIH ranking 4 of the last 6 years for departments of Emergency Medicine, coordinating the administrative support to execute the $7 million Massey Traumatic Brain Injury Research Program; was instrumental in opening the Emergency Critical Care Center in University Hospital; and spearheaded the acquisition of a new patient transport jet and three helicopters for the Survival Flight Program.
