ACGME Response

ACGME's response to SAEM, AACEM, and RAMS' joint statement sent to ACGME's leadership on February 27, 2026 seeking clarity about the timeline surrounding the proposed changes to the Emergency Medicine Program Requirements.
Dear Members of the Emergency Medicine Community:
On February 10, the ACGME sent a message with an update on review of the proposed Program Requirements for Emergency Medicine. We recognize the uncertainty and anxiety that questions about timing and implementation can create and want to offer clarity.
Importantly, no matter what the final Requirements look like, the current delay in reaching a final decision will also delay implementation of any approved changes. As a result, nothing will change as of July 1, 2027.
When a final decision is made, the implementation timeline will be determined with careful consideration of the time programs will need to make any necessary changes to come into compliance. Adequate lead time for programs will be a central part of that discussion.
We are grateful for your continued engagement and remain committed to a thoughtful, transparent process as this work continues.
