The following is an overview of the SAEMF/CDEM Innovations in Undergraduate Emergency Medicine Education Grant. All application components, including letters of support, must be submitted through the SAEM Foundation Grant Portal. All applications must be received by 5 pm (Central time) on their due date. No additional material (e.g. updates, publications, corrections, etc.) will be accepted after the application deadline.


Applicants must use the most current version of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) PHS 398 forms which can be downloaded at: If there are questions regarding formatting, formatting which conforms to NIH guidelines will always be accepted.

The latest NIH biosketch format should be used for the applicant, mentor(s), and other key personnel. This includes a section for a personal statement. See biosketch instructions for further information.

Font type and size for the application should be Arial 11 point, including literature cited. Single line spacing is acceptable. Figures, charts, tables, and legends or captions may be in smaller size font but must be clear and legible.

Blank/plain paper can be used as needed in lieu of continuation pages when no form is specified to be used. The margins must be no less than the following dimensions: top: 0.8, bottom: 0.5, left: 0.5, right: 0.5.

Submission must be no longer than 5 pages in length (excluding references). All proposals must include specific aims, background/significance, preliminary work (if applicable), and approach.

A minimum of two letters of reference are requested, with one from the department chair or equivalent and the other from the mentor, whose letter should include a mentorship plan and testament to support the applicant for the duration of the award. A proposed budget and budget justification for how funds will be allocated during the one-year period are also required.


The mission of CDEM is six-fold:

  • To advance the education of medical students as it pertains to the specialty of emergency and acute care medicine.
  • To serve as a unified voice for EM clerkship directors and medical student educators on a national level.
  • To provide a forum for EM clerkship directors and medical student educators to communicate, share ideas, and generate solutions to common problems.
  • To foster undergraduate medical education research and provide a platform for collaboration.
  • To foster the professional development and career satisfaction of EM clerkship directors and medical student educators.
  • To foster relationships with other organizations to promote medical education.

The proposed project for the grant should innovatively address one of the six areas of the mission and be able to be shared across those teaching undergraduate Emergency Medicine. Areas of innovation can include teaching, assessment or faculty development, and should advance understanding or best practices of these or other areas. Additionally, the grant recipient should study this innovation in some way: validity, effectiveness, etc.


The Applicant

The successful applicant for the SAEMF/CDEM Innovations in Undergraduate Emergency Medicine Education Grant must:

  1. Be a member of SAEM in good standing at the time of the application deadline, and during the entire award period.
  2. Be a member of CDEM in good standing at the time of the application deadline and during the entire award period.
  3. Have an advanced/doctoral or terminal educational degree (e.g., MD, DO, PhD, PharmD, DSc or equivalent).
  4. Be actively involved with a department or division of emergency medicine.

Greater consideration for receipt of the award will be given to applicants who:

  1. Demonstrate a sustained interest in and commitment to undergraduate emergency medicine. This demonstrated commitment may include participation in CDEM and other educational endeavors, peer-reviewed publications and presentations, or presentations of scholarly activity at scientific meetings, and local, regional, national and international activities focused on research and emergency medicine-focused medical education work.
  2. Demonstrate evidence of involvement and commitment in SAEM activities and functions. Demonstrated involvement includes number of years as a member of SAEM and participation in SAEM activities and functions (e.g., SAEM presentations and committee membership).
  3. Demonstrate active involvement with teaching medical students in emergency medicine or directing a course, clerkship or other medical student activity with a focus on students in emergency medicine. Applicants will be judged and scored according to their expressed and demonstrated commitment to these areas. Greater consideration and potentially higher scores will be given to applicants who provide evidence of this commitment. However, prior experience in medical education research and SAEM experience are not required.

The Applicant's Host Institution

Institutional expectations for the successful SAEMF/CDEM Innovations in Undergraduate Emergency Medicine Education Grant application include:

  1. Provide adequate administrative and clerical support to the applicant and project, including, but not limited to, office space, administrative support, and information systems.
  2. Ideally demonstrate a track record of involvement and commitment to undergraduate medical education. Ideally and in the majority of circumstances, the host institution should have an accredited emergency medicine residency program.
  3. Demonstrate the availability of faculty, resident and/or medical student teaching opportunities relevant to the project and applicant’s needs for the project.
  4. Demonstrate appropriate mentorship for the project to be successful.


The SAEMF/CDEM Innovations in Undergraduate Emergency Medicine Education Grant will provide up to $5,000 for an applicant’s project, contingent on the availability of funds from the SAEMF. SAEMF may discontinue, postpone, or change their portion of grant funding based on the amount of funds available. The number and monetary amount of awards granted depend on the quality of applications and status of the SAEMF funds.

Funds from the grant may only be used for direct costs related to the project. A maximum of $1,000 is allowed for travel to conferences to present findings of the proposed research project. Travel expenses must be consistent with the SAEM travel policy. Faculty salary support is excluded. Indirect costs (i.e., facilities and administrative costs) and equipment purchases are not supported by this grant. No additional costs are supported by the SAEMF. Any other costs are the responsibility of the applicant’s host institution. Any residual funds will be returned to SAEMF at the end of the award period.

Costs included in the SAEMF/CDEM Innovations in Undergraduate Emergency Medicine Education Grant should not exceed $5,000 per year. However, in addition to the funds from SAEMF, the budget justification should reflect all pending and active sources of funding relevant to the project. The submission of detailed budgets and budget justifications for the use of funds for the grant from SAEMF and additional funds available to support the goals of the award from all other sources are required as part of the application and again for award recipients during the reporting period of the award.

Failure to meet the award guidelines or inability of the awardee to complete the term of the award shall result in the need to return residual funds to SAEMF.

For projects requiring the host institution’s Institutional Review Board (IRB) or equivalent approval, funds will not be dispersed until IRB approval is obtained. Award extensions may be made at the discretion of the Grants Committee on a case-by-case basis.


The award is for one year (grant period July 1, 2023 – June 30, 2024).


A progress report is due on December 1 during the grant period. The final project and financial report are due June 30th at the end of the grant period. The progress report template is available at Post Award.


The expectations of the awardee to deliver are as follows:

  1. The awardee will attend the SAEM Annual Meeting during the award year, and present their project at the CDEM Annual Business Meeting.
  2. The awardee is additionally expected to submit an abstract reporting on research performed by the awardee during the training period for competitive review with potential for presentation at the SAEM Annual Meeting. Funds from the SAEMF/CDEM Undergraduate Medical Education Grant may not be used to pay for attending the meeting and presenting research or other findings.
  3. Disseminate the innovation for use by other emergency medicine medical student educators within one year of completion of the SAEMF/CDEM Undergraduate Medical Education Grant.
  4. Submit a manuscript (first-authored by the awardee) in a peer-reviewed journal within two years of completing the SAEMF/CDEM Undergraduate Medical Education Grant. The awardee is anticipated to submit this and other manuscripts arising from the products of the grant to Academic Emergency Medicine Education and Training.


The SAEM Grants Committee, augmented with members from the CDEM Academy is responsible for reviewing grant applications for this award, and will make recommendations to the SAEMF Board of Trustees regarding candidate recipients. A scoring system considering the evaluation criteria listed above will be assessed with the goal of funding applicants who meet them. A SAEMF/CDEM Undergraduate Medical Education Grant will be awarded only if an applicant is deemed suitable and worthy of the award. The committee will provide feedback to those whose applications meet application instructions and requirements. Applicants will be encouraged to re-apply with specific modifications in subsequent years.

If human or animal experimentation is to be performed during the period of the award, the department and institution to be used as the training site must affirm that: (1) investigations involving human subjects proposed and subsequently carried out in the application have been endorsed and approved by the IRB, or other clearly designated appropriate body, at the study site; (2) any research involving human subjects will conform ethically with the guidelines prescribed by the NIH; and (3) research involving animals will conform with the current "Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals", NIH publication, of the Department of Health and Human Services/United States Public Health Service (DHHS/USPHS), and has been approved by the Animal Care and Use Committee at the study site.


Applicants and institutions are required by SAEMF to comply with the USPHS regulations, Final Rule, 42 CFR Part 50, Subpart F: Responsibility of Applicants for Promoting Objectivity in Research. The applicant’s and mentor’s institution or host institution official’s signature on the signature page of the application indicates compliance that an institutional administrative process is in effect to identify and resolve conflicting financial interests of the type described in Subpart 50.604(a) with respect to all projects for which funding is sought from SAEMF.


All inventions discovered or arising out of research supported in whole or in part by SAEMF, which may be used in emergency medicine research, teaching, or practice, shall be reported within one (1) year to SAEMF. "Invention" is any discovery, material, method, process, product, program, software or app (mobile, application software, web application, etc) of use, whether or not patented or patentable or copyrighted or copyrightable, that has application of value such that its use, licensing, lease, or sale can generate revenue. If the institution receiving or disbursing SAEMF funds that supported the invention has an established and applicable patent, intellectual property, or technology transfer policy/procedure for administering inventions, SAEMF will defer to that policy. If the institution has no established and applicable patent, intellectual property, or technology transfer policy/procedure for administering inventions, SAEMF shall have the right to determine the disposition of invention rights. In such cases, SAEMF may:

  1. Decide that patent and copyright should be or not be filed;
  2. Release the invention to the inventor(s) or inventor's designee;
  3. Submit the invention to a qualified organization for administration and licensing;
  4. Determine by negotiation the fair share of royalty income to be paid to the inventor(s);
  5. License or make other arrangements for the application and use of the invention on an exclusive or non-exclusive, royalty, or royalty-free basis.
