"Interfacility Transfer of Older Adults: Outcomes and Opportunities for Improving Patient-Centered Care"
A growing number of older adults are transferred from one emergency department (ED) to another hospital for care, however the benefit of these interfacility transfers is often unclear. The risks of interfacility transfers, which remove older adults from their support networks and may increase their chances of developing delirium or other complications, are also not well defined at a population level. This study contributes to public health by improving our understanding of the outcomes associated with interfacility transfer, elucidating the preferences of older adults with regards to transfer, and identifying factors influencing transfer decisions to guide future intervention development.
