"Artificial Intelligence for Dynamic, Individualized CPR Guidance: AID CPR"

Nearly half a million Americans suffer from out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) annually, with only 7-10% surviving to hospital discharge. Current resuscitation algorithms recommend the use of defined interventions at fixed time intervals; however, cardiac arrest is not a static process. To improve outcomes from OHCA, cardiac resuscitation requires new tools that are noninvasive, reliable, and manageable by EMS providers to adjust resuscitation efforts and guide personalized resuscitation. End-tidal carbon dioxide (ETCO2) measurement is a tool that is widely recognized, easy to use, and can potentially provide real-time insights into ongoing resuscitation efforts; however, it has yet to be applied to individualized medicine. This project studies the impact of integrating ETCO2 capnography into OHCA resuscitation.

"Artificial Intelligence for Dynamic, Individualized CPR Guidance: AID CPR"

Dr. Nassal is an assistant professor of emergency medicine and physician-scientist at The Ohio State University. After completion of her bachelor’s degree at the University of California San Diego, she received an MD and a PhD in cardiac physiology at Case Western Reserve University. Dr. Nassal completed her emergency medicine residency and emergency medicine research fellowship at The Ohio State University. She will use the SAEMF Research Training Grant to evaluate intra-arrest tools that can be harnessed to improve out of hospital cardiac arrest resuscitation.
