About SAEM Foundation

The core purpose of the SAEM Foundation is to improve health by investing in academic emergency medicine career development, research, and education. The assets of the SAEM Foundation currently total $14 million, making it the largest foundation for emergency care. To date, Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM) and the SAEM Foundation have provided nearly $14.5 million to fund over 600 grants for emergency medicine researchers and educators.

The SAEM Foundation is incorporated as a 501c3 nonprofit organization and is governed by a Board of Trustees. SAEM provides administrative support to the SAEM Foundation and is its sole member which gives SAEM oversight of the SAEM Foundation.

History

The SAEM Foundation, also known as the SAEM Research Foundation, was created by SAEM in 2008 to establish a resource to protect the assets of the pre-existing Research Fund. The Research Fund was established in 1998 with an initial organizational commitment from SAEM of $1,000,000. In 2003, SAEM initiated a formal membership "giving campaign" that was endorsed by nearly every past president of SAEM, University Association for Emergency Medicine (UAEM), and Society of Teachers of Emergency Medicine (STEM). The organizational contributions from 2003 through 2005 totaled more than $850,000.

The Education Fund was developed in 2008 to provide the same quality training opportunities for educators as the Research Fund does for researchers. This fund was created with the mission to support faculty, residents, and students who have shown promise and expertise in emergency medicine education or are looking to develop innovative educational tools or projects to train the next generation of emergency care providers and teachers.
