Grant Opportunities for Geriatric EM Research
There are many NIH/Public and Private Foundation grant opportunities that provide funding in geriatric emergency medicine research.
Current offerings include:
IMPACT Career Development Awards
NIA IMPACT Collaboratory plans to publish a Request for Applications (RFA) for Career Development Awards (CDA) Program. In this cycle, the IMPACT Collaboratory plans to fund up to two CDAs. These two-year awards support the development of early-stage MD, PhD, or equivalent researchers who seek careers conducting ePCTs for people living with AD/ADRD and their care partners. Each award will provide $100,000 annually in direct costs with an indirect cost rate capped at 8%.
MSTAR
The Medical Student Training in Aging Research (MSTAR) program awards medical students) short term scholarships (typically for the summer after the first year) to conduct research and gain exposure to academic geriatrics. The program is administered by the American Federation for Aging Research and the National Institute on Aging.
GEMSSTAR
The GEMSSTAR (Grants for Early Medical/Surgical Specialists' Transition to Aging Research) is an R03 award from the National Institute on Aging is intended to provide support for early stage clinician-scientists who have recently completed their clinical training in any medical or surgical specialty to establish a track record in aging research in their specialty area. The award currently provides $100,000 annually in direct costs for 2 years. Many emergency physicians have previously held or currently hold this award.
Beeson
The Paul B. Beeson Emerging Leaders Career Development Award in Aging is a K76 award from the National Institute on Aging intended to develop of a cadre clinically trained early-stage investigators who have begun to establish research careers and have shown signs of leadership potential who can have a significant impact on the health of older individuals in their field of expertise. The award currently provides $225,000 annually in direct costs for 5 years. Many emergency physicians have previously held or currently hold this award.
