A Systematic Review Evaluating Pain Assessment Strategies for Patients with Dementia in the Emergency Department: The Geriatric ED Guidelines 2.0

Summary

This is a systematic review of pain assessment tools targeted for persons living with dementia (PLWD) in the emergency department. We identified one study addressing the effect of PAINAD scale, highlighting the need for more investigation for adequate assessment of pain among PLWD. This work is important, as identifying the adequate pain assessment for PLWD is the key component of geriatric ED guidelines focused on dementia.

Sangil Lee, MD, is faculty and an emergency medicine physician at Weill Cornell Medical College. He is a clinician, epidemiologist, and researcher in geriatrics.
