Interviews: By invitation after completed application. Interview days are Tuesdays or Thursdays beginning at 7:00 a.m., include conference, faculty/director interview, lunch with residents, and facility tour. Day ends by 2:00 p.m. November - February.
EMS Exposure: Base station MD for ground and helicopter units. Field exposure at scene accompanying duty officer of the day in large urban paramedic system. Paramedic teaching. Didactic program in core curriculum. Faculty members recently appointed EMS medical directors. Expanded role for residents in EMS development. EMS Fellowship started July 2007.
Aeromedical Program: Yes, residents may ride on helicopter missions - not required.

Elective program features: Full range of electives on and off campus. Extensive visiting professor program.
Other curriculum features: 24 hour contemporaneous double or triple attending clinical supervision in a resident run department. Excellent patient population with wide spectrum of age, illness, and socio-economic class and overall high acuity level (2500 multiple trauma admissions per year). Faculty with special expertise in toxicology, pediatrics, internal medicine, critical care medicine, EMS, ultrasound and research. Separate pediatric ED supervised by Peds EM faculty integrated into the program. High fidelity simulation is now incorporated into our educational curriculum.

Fellowships: 
1) Administrative: PGY4 hospital salary and clinical hours with additional stipend. Active involvement in running multiple satellite EDs with focus on cost-effective care and Q/A. Training in the use of access database with focus on impact of informatics on clinical care and cost. EMS fellowship to begin July 1, 2007.
2) Ultrasound: The fellow is fully integrated into the residency ultrasound curriculum and will complete in excess of 800 bedside ultrasound exams in the course of the program. In addition, the fellow will develop expertise in DVD-based ultrasound exam review and will be prepared to function in an academic setting.
3) EMS: Partnership between local county government and Department of Emergency Medicine at ORMC. The fellow is an Orange County employee and serves in the capacity of Assistant Medical Director for the Orange County EMS System. Additional clinical time supplements the fellowship salary.
