UNIVERSITY OF UTAH
The Global EM Fellowship at the University of Utah is a 2-year fellowship. The focus is on education and teaching emergency medicine internationally, especially in countries where EM does not yet have robust education and training environments. We maintain long-term, mutually beneficial collaborations, implementing ethical best practices, and seek to iteratively learn and be guided by the needs and input from our colleagues. The fellowship is also focused on developing skills and experiences within regional rural and indigenous health clinical and educational opportunities.
8 shifts/month. Mix of academic (University of Utah) and community sites (Day Break, UT; Rock Springs, WY; Shiprock, NM-IHS Facility). Fellows will supervise residents and medical students while at the University of Utah main campus as well as help run the resident scholarly track. They will have multiple opportunities to teach learners internationally. The fellowship also includes a Master's of Global Health from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
Please see our website for more updated information.
Fellowship Experience
Currently, the University of Utah maintains active international collaborations in Vietnam and Botswana. There are multiple additional opportunities throughout Latin America for applicants with fluent Spanish skills, and many opportunities for additional projects with our colleagues worldwide. The fellows will also work in indigenous communities (in Shiprock and Chinle), and participate in the indigenous and rural health curriculum. The fellows can help teach/support the resident global health track, and have options to teach medical students if desired.
Fellowship Curriculum
The fellowship curriculum includes bimonthly sessions that cover global EM overview, ethics and pitfalls in global health, role of EM in international public health, best practices in international rotations, focused studies on regional health care and emergency medicine. There is a global EM seminar series with visiting guests such as experts from MSF and ACEP International. We have a book club and discussions regarding rural and indigenous health. The Dept of EM also hosts international observerships for our colleagues, such as hosting physicians from Cho Ray hospital in Vietnam.
