EASTERN VIRGINIA MEDICAL SCHOOL AT OLD DOMINION UNIVERSITY

The Global Emergency Medicine Fellowship at EVMS at ODU has a variety of impactful opportunities for the fellow. Past Fellows have worked in various locations including Mozambique, India, Zimbabwe, the Philippines, Guatemala, and Trinidad focusing on projects in education and systems development and direct patient care. We have additional relationships in Kenya, Senegal, Nigeria, and other locations in Africa, SE Asia, Europe, The Caribbean and Central/South America.

You may choose either a one-year or two-year track for this Fellowship. 

MPH and Global Health Certificate = 2 years

Global Health Certificate = 1 year 

Two to three plus months of overseas medical experience per year. 1,000 hours of clinical work in the Emergency Department per year. Competitive salary of over $114,000 plus benefits and a generous travel stipend.

GEM Fellowship curriculum will be designed to focus on public health methodology, tropical diseases, humanitarian emergencies, overseas medical missions, and additional topics of interest to the fellow as approved by the Program Director. The fellow will be required to maintain our project in the Philippines, which focuses on education, patient care, event medicine, and quality improvement initiatives. Fellows are encouraged to either complete a tropical disease course or a humanitarian emergencies course abroad. Fellows will be required to successfully complete the mandatory curriculum requirements provided in their fellowship guide.

Fellows will work clinically as employees of Emergency Physicians of Tidewater (EPT), which is the private democratic group that serves as faculty for the EVMS Department of Emergency Medicine. The practice opportunities within EPT will serve to broaden the Fellow's clinical acumen and experience, working in the Tidewater area of Virginia (Norfolk, Virginia Beach, and Suffolk). Fellows will have the opportunity to supervise and teach EM residents on shift. Faculty appointment through EVMS at the Instructor level is granted.

The faculty of the EVMS Department of Emergency Medicine have diverse and 3 of 4 extensive experiences and skills, with expertise in Global Health, EM Ultrasound, EMS, Hyperbaric and Undersea Medicine, Tactical Medicine, and International and Domestic Disaster Response. Additionally, EVMS Emergency Medicine faculty members have expertise in leadership through active roles in the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP), Virginia ACEP and the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM).

For enrollment in July 2027 the application deadline is October 8, 2026. We will accept applications on a rolling basis.

Qualifications: All applicants must graduate from an ACGME-accredited Emergency Medicine residency program. Applicants must be considered board-eligible or board-certified (BE/BC) by the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) or the American Osteopathic Board of Emergency Medicine (AOBEM). If accepted, all applicants must qualify for a Virginia state medical license and be able to be credentialed in all seven Sentara facilities. Master of Public Health (MPH) Fellows on the two-year track must complete the requirements for an MPH degree from an institution approved by the Fellowship Director if accepted into the fellowship program.
