AWAEM/GEMA Global Travel Scholarship

To support investigators or educators from low- or middle-income countries (per World Bank classification) who have shown dedication to and potential for significant career achievements in emergency medicine through research, education, service, advocacy, or administration, and whose work is in line with the core purposes of AWAEM and GEMA. This award will assist with administrative and travel costs to attend the SAEM Annual Meeting in Atlanta, GA May 18-21, 2026.

The award includes:
  • SAEM26 Travel, visa and lodging expenses
  • SAEM26 Annual Meeting registration fees
  • An invited SAEM didactic
  • A 1-year membership to SAEM, AWAEM & GEMA
  • A printed award
  • An opportunity to contribute an article to the AWAEM newsletter and/or SAEM Pulse
  • A tour of a local ED (if possible)
  • Coaching/mentoring with EM women physician volunteers

Eligibility:

  • Physicians pursuing a career in Emergency Medicine who are native to, trained in and are practicing in a low and middle income country
  • Physicians who work primarily in the Emergency Department at all stages of training including residents, certificate-candidates and attending/consultants are eligible
  • Preference will be given to individuals who have been selected to present a didactic, poster, or other presentation for the SAEM26
  • Preference will be given to those whose work is aligned with the mission of AWAEM and GEMA.

The core purpose of the Academy for Women in Academic Emergency Medicine (AWAEM) is to enhance the recruitment, promotion, career satisfaction, advancement, and retention of women in academic emergency medicine throughout their careers and to advance our understanding of the role of sex and gender in emergency care.

The core purpose of the Global Emergency Medicine Academy (GEMA) is to advance the delivery of equitable emergency care globally through education, research, mentorship, community, leadership development, and advocacy.

  • Nominee’s CV
  • One letter of interest describing how nominee would benefit from the award
  • Letter of Recommendation from a colleague or leader in EM
  • Copy of submitted didactic, poster or abstract for SAEM26, if applicable Nomination instructions:

  • Please note: The awardee will be responsible for obtaining their own US visa
