AWAEM Committees and Task Forces
We Need People Like You to Keep AWAEM a Success!
One of the primary ways AWAEM members can play an active role in charting the course of their academy, and thereby contributing to the advancement of women in emergency medicine (EM), is by joining one of AWAEM's committees or task forces.
Administration / Clinical Operations
The AWAEM Administration / Clinical Operations Committee helps promote women into leadership and administrative roles in academic EM through didactics, mentorship, networking, and scholarship. The committee creates a portfolio of educational offerings, identifies and implements platforms to provide content (collaborating with the Didactic Committee to identify items to bring to conferences), and adds growth opportunities to the monthly AWAEM calls.
Advanced EM Workshops
The AWAEM Advanced EM Workshops Committee develops the content of the pre-conference workshops, including soliciting speakers, working with other academies and interest groups on programming, and advertising.
Awards
The AWAEM Awards Committee is in charge of recognizing members who have made significant contributions and achievements in academic EM. This includes promoting the annual call for awards, reviewing and determining winners, and recruiting sponsors for awards.
Didactics
The AWAEM Didactics Committee develops didactics and other readily available materials to promote leadership and professional development for women in academic EM. The committee works with members to develop and submit didactic proposals for both the national and regional SAEM meetings, and keeps a running archive of didactic proposals that have been submitted and accepted.
Global EM
The AWAEM Global EM Committee recognizes the unique challenges for women working in global health, and aims to create a forum for networking, collaboration, and mentorship. Committee members generate conversations about the spectrum of professional academic, and personal challenges women face in global EM; create social media posts and online resources to foster interactions; recruit women around the world to engage in online platforms; and coordinate the application and review for the AWAEM/GEMA travel scholarship.
Medical Student
The AWAEM Medical Student Committee supports medical student and resident members through mentorship opportunities, educational resources, and networking opportunities.
Membership
The AWAEM Membership Committee is dedicated to recruiting and retaining members through distributing welcome packets and encouraging member involvement, highlighting group accomplishments, developing and maintaining recruitment materials and swag, and working with the SAEM Residents and Medical Students (RAMS) group to grow medical student involvement.
Microsite
The AWAEM Microsite Committee is responsible for updating and maintaining the AWAEM microsite content, acting as liaison to the SAEM IT group and keeping track of microsite activity.
Newsletter
The AWAEM Newsletter Committee publishes the quarterly AWAEM Awareness Newsletter, archives past newsletter articles for recruitment and professional development purposes, and creates two SAEM Pulse newsletter articles per year.
Regional Meetings
The AWAEM Regional Meetings Committee organizes and leads AWAEM events at SAEM's regional meetings, serving as liaison with the regional meeting chairs to plan events like luncheons, mentorship events, and didactics. Committee members also assist with promoting the events and spearheading regional mentorship opportunities.
Research
The AWAEM Research Committee assists with collecting data on gender disparities in academic EM, including but not limited to salary disparity, burnout, and barriers to salary and rank equity. Members publish the results of research endeavors and present findings at regional and national meetings.
Wellness
The AWAEM Wellness Committee aims to maximize member resiliency to create more balanced lives, establishing avenues for members to share successful strategies and resources to better support one another.
Join a Task Force
AWAEM periodically organizes task forces to focus on topics and issues of interest to our members and the academic EM community. Below are active task forces available to join:
- Letter Writers Bureau Task Force: this task force is to help women prepare for academic promotion.
- Starting a Women's EM Group Task Force: this task force is providing resources and best practices for starting and maintaining institutional women's EM groups.
- Senior Task Force: this task force focuses on our members in their late careers and near retirement.
