The 2008 SAEM Annual Meeting in Washington, DC was a huge success.  There were 2,359 registered attendees, the largest ever for an annual meeting, plus very well attended pre-day events.  Thanks to everyone that attended the meeting and to the many people that contributed to its success.  Below is a summary of the numbers, award winners, a few highlights, and links to pictures.

The special events sessions were also heavily attended and very well-received.  Over 1,000 people were present for the Keynote Townhall that featured representatives from the 3 political campaigns discussing the future of U.S. health care and its impact on emergency care.  In another session, Dr. Craig Vanderwagan from the Department of Health and Human Services spoke about the state of disaster preparedness in the U.S.  Approximately 250 people enjoyed the Friday morning buffet breakfast networking session and 48 runners woke up in time the following morning to partake in the 2nd Annual Fun Run (even though we ran out of t-shirts).

Finally, teams were out in force for the First Annual Emergency Medicine Dodgeball Championship Tournament – team jerseys, headbands, high-socks, and cannon-arms.  In total, 30 teams played 93 games to crown the eventual champion, with all proceeds donated to the SAEM Research Fund.  Special thanks to Dave Milzman and the Georgetown medical students (John Elliot, Jeff Orr, and Hahn Soe Lin) for refereeing and organizing the tournament.  Final results from the tournament were:

1st place: Darwin's Nemesis (Penn State)
2nd place: TKO (Univ Michigan)
Semi finalist: Tachylordyosis (Univ VA)
Semi finalist: Monsters of the Midway (Univ Chicago)
Dodgeball MVP: Scott Sevyreud (UVA, former SAEM President)

2008 Satellite Symposia

The Annual Meeting of the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM) brings together academic emergency medicine physicians from many regions to a single location. Thus, these meetings provide an opportunity for organizations other than SAEM to access the academic emergency medicine community. To take advantage of this opportunity, organizations may hold meetings, symposia, or other "satellite" events at or near the location of SAEM meetings, in the days before, during, or after the SAEM Annual Meeting itself. Such satellite meetings are not SAEM activities and therefore are not sponsored or co-sponsored by SAEM however, these events must be pre-approved by SAEM. . . more info
