Bringing the Outside In: Incorporating Wilderness Medicine Into Your Curriculum

This workshop teaches the fundamentals of resource-limited medicine and practical ways to implement wilderness medicine (WM) into your curriculum. Sharpen your skills in WM including decision-making based on history and physical exam with intuition (as opposed to technology), improvised medical care, and incorporating environmental factors on topics less commonly seen in the ED (e.g lightning, toxic plants, and altitude illness). Rotating small groups will teach hands-on skills and instructional techniques. Participants will then design activities to take back to their institutions.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this session, participants should be able to:

  • Discuss the fundamentals of academic wilderness medicine and improvised care

  • Appraise and create wilderness medicine curricula for medical schools and emergency medicine residencies

  • Discuss a variety of wilderness medicine teaching modalities and begin using wilderness medicine as a niche for professional development

  • Identify potential barriers and solutions for implementing wilderness medicine educational initiatives
