WHO ARE WE?
The “Clerkship Directors in Emergency Medicine” (CDEM), formed in 2008, is the first “Academy” within the membership of the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM). CDEM is comprised of medical student educators who are committed to enhancing medical student education within our specialty. CDEM provides an opportunity for EM clerkship directors and medical student educators to join forces, collaborate, and become a unified voice at the national level.
UPCOMING MEETING
There will be a CDEM Medical Student Educator track at the CORD Academic Assembly (March 3 - 6, 2010) in Orlando Florida at the Caribe Royale. As a part this track, we will again be conducting a session on “Innovations in Medical Student Curriculum Development”. A second web page will open when you click here for more information.
WHAT IS OUR MISSION?
- To advance the education of medical students as it pertains to the specialty of emergency and acute care medicine.
- To serve as a unified voice for EM clerkship directors and medical student educators.
- To provide a forum for EM clerkship directors and medical student educators to communicate, share ideas, and generate solutions to common problems.
- To foster undergraduate medical education research.
- To foster the professional development and career satisfaction of EM clerkship directors and medical student educators.
- To foster relationships with other organizations to promote medical education.
CDEM LISTSERVE AND FORUMS:
CDEM has its own listserv that automatically enrolls all CDEM members. The email to post questions and comments to the group is: CDEM@lists.saem.org. Give An Hour Of Your Time To Help Medical Students
Would you give an hour of your time to help medical students in emergency medicine? The answer, of course, is yes. Most of us routinely do this already. That hour has a positive impact on that student. By continuing what you make in that one hour to CDEM you have the potential of impacting thousands of medical students! (Read More)
UPDATE (12/30/09) by Dr. Dave Wald: CDEM's responds to LCME's call for public comment on accreditation standard ED-15.
The LCME has recently chosen to amend standards ED-11 and ED-15. CDEM was represented by Jonathan Fisher, MD at the hearing for public comment on November 10, 2009. Members representing other disciplines were also present at this meeting expressing various concerns. CDEM working as a member of the Alliance for Clinical Education (ACE) helped develop suggested language changes to the Accreditation Standard ED-15. No comments or suggested changes were made regarding ED-11. CDEM has endorsed the language changes recommended by ACE.
CDEM also has worked with the leadership of other EM professional organizations to submit a unified response to the LCME regarding ED-15. We are pleased to inform our membership that these suggested changes and an accompanying letter (download pdf) supporting our viewpoint has been uniformly endorsed by the following organizations:
- American Academy of Emergency Medicine (AAEM)
- American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP)
- Association of Academic Chairs of Emergency Medicine (AACEM)
- Council of Emergency Medicine Residency Directors (CORD)
- Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM)
