CDEM

WHO ARE WE?

The “Clerkship Directors in Emergency Medicine” (CDEM), formed in 2008, is the first “Academy” within the membership of the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM). CDEM is comprised of medical student educators who are committed to enhancing medical student education within our specialty. CDEM provides an opportunity for EM clerkship directors and medical student educators to join forces, collaborate, and become a unified voice at the national level.

UPCOMING MEETING

There will be a CDEM Medical Student Educator track at the CORD Academic Assembly (March 3 - 6, 2010) in Orlando Florida at the Caribe Royale. As a part this track, we will again be conducting a session on “Innovations in Medical Student Curriculum Development”. A second web page will open when you click here for more information.

WHAT IS OUR MISSION?

  • To advance the education of medical students as it pertains to the specialty of emergency and acute care medicine.
  • To serve as a unified voice for EM clerkship directors and medical student educators.
  • To provide a forum for EM clerkship directors and medical student educators to communicate, share ideas, and generate solutions to common problems.
  • To foster undergraduate medical education research.
  • To foster the professional development and career satisfaction of EM clerkship directors and medical student educators.
  • To foster relationships with other organizations to promote medical education.

CDEM LISTSERVE AND FORUMS:

CDEM has its own listserv that automatically enrolls all CDEM members.  The email to post questions and comments to the group is:  CDEM@lists.saem.org.  For discussions that you'd like to continue and keep on record for future references and for uploading of important documents, the members-only CDEM Forums continues to be available by clicking on the link in the upper right of this screen.

Give An Hour Of Your Time To Help Medical Students
Would you give an hour of your time to help medical students in emergency medicine?  The answer, of course, is yes. Most of us routinely do this already.  That hour has a positive impact on that student. By continuing what you make in that one hour to CDEM you have the potential of impacting thousands of medical students! (Read More)

UPDATE (12/30/09) by Dr. Dave Wald: CDEM's responds to LCME's call for public comment on accreditation standard ED-15.

The LCME has recently chosen to amend standards ED-11 and ED-15.  CDEM was represented by Jonathan Fisher, MD at the hearing for public comment on November 10, 2009.  Members representing other disciplines were also present at this meeting expressing various concerns.  CDEM working as a member of the Alliance for Clinical Education (ACE) helped develop suggested language changes to the Accreditation Standard ED-15. No comments or suggested changes were made regarding ED-11.  CDEM has endorsed the language changes recommended by ACE.

CDEM also has worked with the leadership of other EM professional organizations to submit a unified response to the LCME regarding ED-15.  We are pleased to inform our membership that these suggested changes and an accompanying letter (download pdf) supporting our viewpoint has been uniformly endorsed by the following organizations:

  • American Academy of Emergency Medicine (AAEM)
  • American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP)
  • Association of Academic Chairs of Emergency Medicine (AACEM)
  • Council of Emergency Medicine Residency Directors (CORD)
  • Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM)

CDEM First Year Mile Stones

May 15, 2009:
We had a very productive 4 hour CDEM meeting at SAEM in New Orleans helmed by the
new CDEM Chair Dr. David Wald.  The featured keynote speakers were Dr. David Cone and Dr. John Burton from Academic EM, and the educational session was on "CDEM Journal Club" by Dr. Sorabh Khandelwal (handout).

We are holding strong at over 150 CDEM members in the Academy with also international members.  Our curriculum and resources have been adopted in Australia medical students.  Topics of active discussion included:
*  Clerkship curriculum
*  Online CDEM Membership Directory and Clerkship Catalog
*  Publication opportunities
*  Definition of educational scholarship - what does this mean for educators?
*  Upcoming Medical Student Educator's Handbook
*  Self-Study Modules (online textbook)
*  Interactive Digital Instruction in Emergency Medicine (DIEM) cases
*  e-Advisor program

November 3, 2008:
The interdisciplinary organization Alliance for Clinical Education (ACE) met at the AAMC meeting and voted CDEM to join ACE with full-voting membership.  This is a remarkable achievement given that our CDEM Academy has only been in existence since May 2008.

THE ALLIANCE FOR CLINICAL EDUCATION

The “Clerkship Directors in Emergency Medicine” (CDEM) was inducted as a full voting member in the Alliance for Clinical Education (ACE).  ACE is a high-profile, multidisciplinary group formed to enhance clinical education of medical students (www.allianceforclinicaleducation.org).  The Academy of CDEM is the first and only, non-founding member group to apply to become a member of ACE.  In addition to CDEM, ACE is comprised of the national organizations:

*  Association of Directors of Medical Student Education in Psychiatry (ADMSEP)
*  Association of Professors in Gynecology and Obstetrics (APGO)

*  Assocation for Surgical Education (ASE)
*  Clerkship Directors in Internal Medicine (CDIM)
*  Consortium of Neurology Clerkship Directors (CNCD)
*  Council on Medical Student Education in Pediatrics (COMSEP)
*  Society of Teaching of Family Medicine (STFM)

May 19, 2008:

SAEM and the SAEM Bylaws Committee officially approves the formation of an Academy, and CDEM is the inaugural flagship academy!  We have over 100 members and counting.  Keep up the great work, everyone!

October 2007:
The SAEM Board of Directors approved the formation of the Academy of CDEM, pending amendments within the Constitution and Bylaws.

EMERGENCY MEDICINE CLERKSHIP PRIMER: A MANUAL FOR MEDICAL STUDENTS

Congrats to Dave Wald, our fearless editor-in-chief for the EM Clerkship Primer book! It was just reviewed by Academic EM. Sample comments include: “an exceptional guide for medical students” and a “highly recommended first step for a successful entrance into a career in EM”.

Thanks to all the authors who contributed to this CDEM project!
