Master Clinician Bedside Teaching Award

To recognize the emergency physician whose primary responsibility is clinical teaching in an emergency medicine residency setting and who is regarded by current residents, medical students, and residency graduates as a master clinician educator who has profoundly influenced their clinical practice.

Eligibility

Applicant

The nominee must be:

  • Primarily a clinician who has outstanding bedside teaching skills
  • EM residency-affiliated clinical teaching responsibilities for a minimum of 10 years
  • An SAEM member

Submission

Criteria for this award:

  1. Nominating letter
    • Nominating letter from chair or program director to include testimonials from a minimum of five graduates who are no longer affiliated with the residency, at least two of whom are five or more years post training.  Testimonials must include individual's name, year of graduation, current institution, and position.
  2. Letter of support from current residents
    • One letter of support from a current chief resident representing all of the residents in the program.
  3. Bedside teaching ratings
    • Details to include description of rating categories and overall summary score, with the nominee's scores and the range and mean for all Program faculty scores for the previous five years.
      Data should include:
      EM residents' evaluation of faculty
      Medical students' evaluation of faculty.  If not available, please explain why.
  4. Honors or Awards
    • EM Residents
    • Medical students
    • EMT, nursing, community (lay person) teaching
  5. Other Supporting Materials
    • Evidence of preparing formal course didactics (e.g., "wound care week" or "critical care series" or similar curriculum.
    • Superior ratings from residents or medical students for lectures, workshops, and other educational settings given by invitation at an institution supporting EM residency training but not affiliated with the home institution.
    • Superior ratings for CME-related teaching.
