Jonathan Fisher, MD, MPH

J FisherI am a passionate medical educator and researcher with a drive for innovation and excellence, and I would be honored to serve on the SAEM Board of Directors. I have a long track record of experience and success in organizational leadership. My interest in serving began during my training at the Harvard Affiliated Emergency Medicine Residency at Massachusetts General Hospital/Brigham and Women’s Hospital where I served as a chief resident. I was also a member of the EMRA Board of Directors and served as the liaison to SAEM, further cultivating my love for research and education.  This experience led me to pursue my first job out of residency in the position of clerkship director at Albert Einstein Medical Center as part of the Thomas Jefferson University and Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. After a few years, I returned to Boston and joined the faculty of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School to help build the research program where I served as the chair of the research development committee in the department of emergency medicine. I also became a vice chair of the hospital IRB. While at BIDMC I returned to my EMS roots and founded an ACGME-accredited emergency medical services fellowships during the initial wave. In 2015, I moved to Maricopa Medical Center and the University of Arizona College of Medicine-Phoenix to build a new, required emergency medicine clerkship. I am currently making the leap to the great state of Texas to join the faculty of Texas Christian University and University of North Texas Health Science Center School of Medicine to help build the Longitudinal Clerkship.

Over the years I have distinguished myself with service on local and national committees, educational lectures, research, and peer-reviewed publications. I am a builder, creator, and innovator. One example of my success on a national level is the formation of the Clerkship Directors in Emergency Medicine (CDEM) and the creation of the academy concept within SAEM. I was a founding SAEM board member and chair.  Over the years, I have served on numerous SAEM committees including the program committee, chair of the Graduate Medical Education Committee, and fellowship approval committee. In addition to my work with SAEM, I have served on and held leadership positions on numerous national committees within ACEP and CORD. One of my keys to success is the ability to build collaborations and teams and take an inclusive approach.

I am excited to serve SAEM and its members at this critical time in academic emergency medicine.  One of my keys to success is the ability to build systems and collaborations. I like to think about what the final product needs to look like and then work backward to create the system with the people that reflect the desired outcome. This allows me to think big while remaining true to core values. I firmly believe in a growth mindset that constantly pushes us to learn more and become smarter through hard work and perseverance. It is only through continual assessment and adaptation that we are able to make progress. I am also a firm believer in utilizing data-driven decisions to push an organization to the next level. Throughout the different stages of my career, I have benefited from excellent mentorship.  SAEM serves a vital role in providing a place for that strong mentorship and an academic home that is crucial to the development and future of the specialty. I look to the successes of SAEM in advancing and protecting the academic mission of the specialty and would be honored to represent you.

Chadwick D. Miller, MD, MS

C MillerMy passion for academic emergency medicine drives my desire to serve on the SAEM Board of Directors. I currently serve as chair of a large academic department of emergency medicine, a clinical researcher with NIH funding, leader of a 16-emergency department, emergency medicine practice network within our academic health system, and an emergency medicine physician with direct patient care responsibilities. I completed residency training in emergency medicine at The Ohio State University and obtained a research Master’s degree from Wake Forest University. I have a great appreciation for our specialty’s tremendous opportunity and the importance of the many current challenges and future transitions we will face in the years to come. As a society of academicians, how we lead, develop our members, and respond to these changes will influence the future of our specialty. I have been contributing to SAEM as an active member for the past 19 years, serving and leading numerous committees and subcommittees, such as my recent work 2018-2019 leading the fellowship approval committee, and supporting our Society’s research pillar through teaching, mentoring, and reviewing. I am ready to contribute more. I want to help lead our society through the next set of challenges. If given the opportunity to serve on the SAEM Board of Directors, I will offer relentless energy and focus towards advancing the SAEM mission.

As a mission-oriented professional society, SAEM serves the interests of its members. By listening to its members, SAEM and its Board of Directors can respond better to the diverse challenges faced by academicians who often work in very different professional settings. Through better member engagement, we can position our unique organization to lead the academic future of our specialty. By uniting or aligning, when possible, with other societies and organizations, we grow more powerful. Holding steadfast to foundational academic principles while achieving these other tasks is the balance that makes SAEM successful.

To achieve this balance, I will promote a process of continual evolution and reassessment of the SAEM mission. The existing pillars of the strategic plan are sound: medical education, research impact, virtual relevance, and member/leader development. As a member of the board of SAEM, I will ensure we harness the strength and skills of the SAEM membership to achieve the SAEM stated vision to be “the premier organization for developing academic leaders in education and research and for creating and disseminating content with the greatest impact on emergency care.” Success in these endeavors will pay off by improving health as the long-term goal. Our progress will be characterized by greater cohesiveness and engagement of members, higher standards for research and education, member development as future leaders of our specialty, and greater recognition of SAEM as being the most influential academic organization of our specialty.

I will offer my perspective as a researcher, and as a chair of a thriving academic department. In that latter role, I have front line experience navigating some of the challenges and opportunities facing our academic specialty. As examples, within our academic department, we have built a large network of 16 emergency departments that are synergistic to our academic mission. We are also deploying telehealth solutions to design the next phase of urgent and emergent care across our region. Additionally, we are working across our health system to mitigate overcrowding and combat the negative impact of boarding. If elected, I will work with the board of directors to refine the role of SAEM in optimizing our academic mission and our clinical care delivery as we seek to improve the health of the patients we serve. 

Joel Moll, MD
Virginia Commonwealth University

J MollI am honored to be considered for the position of member-at-large on the SAEM Board of Directors.  I have had extensive past involvement with SAEM on multiple committees (Graduate Medical Education, Ethics, Program, Resident and Student Advisory), academies and interest groups (ADIEM, Evidence Based Medicine, Educational Research, Sex and Gender), and on several task forces (Diversity and Inclusion, Fellowship Certification, Leadership Development). I have also held leadership positions as president of the Academy for Diversity and Inclusion in Emergency Medicine (ADIEM), as a member of COAL (Coalition of Academic Leaders), and as co-chair of the IGNITE! and Pre-Meeting Workshop planning committees. I have had the pleasure to present numerous didactics, innovations, and scholarship projects to SAEM regionally and nationally over my career in academic medicine. I feel this extensive background helps me to understand SAEM as an organization, and hope it allows me the opportunity to give back to something that has been so formative and impactful in my career.

We are at a time in academic medicine where the meaning and purpose of our charge and the definition of our practice are being examined and influenced by many sources both within and outside our specialty.  As the premier organization representing all the domains of academic emergency medicine, SAEM has a unique and important role not only responding to change but also in shaping it. If selected to be a member-at-large on the SAEM board of directors I will channel your dedication to the success of the organization and the missions and people that we serve. I have witnessed SAEM grow stronger as it has become more diverse and responsive to the needs of our members and the important issues and challenges of our communities. By engaging the next generation of learners, patients, clinicians, and educators, SAEM is poised to continue and increase its influence and resources devoted to the unique calling and entity of academic emergency medicine. Forward-looking thoughts, plans, and motion will make SAEM not only more relevant but more of a leader in the future.  Ultimately, academic emergency medicine is about service: to our patients, our learners, our teachers, and each other. SAEM reflects that, and steps toward health equity, inclusion, and development have made SAEM more relevant in recent years. I have a record of service and leadership in all the academic domains of emergency medicine, and in particular with a focus on equity, inclusion, and development. My vision of SAEM is that it be clearly and easily inclusive of all academic emergency medicine, and a major imitative would be that all are welcome and feel included. I would be privileged to continue my service to the profession and SAEM members as a member of the board.  

Andrew Nugent, MD
University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine 

A NugentI graduated from the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine in 1996 and completed my residency in emergency medicine at the Texas Tech Health Sciences Center El Paso Campus in 1999. Upon graduation from residency I returned to the University of Iowa as the first residency-trained emergency physician faculty. Early in my career I drove the creation of the only EM residency in the state of Iowa as well as the formation of the current independent department of emergency medicine. From 2003-2008, I served as the vice chair of operations/medical director before taking on my current role as chair in 2009. 

I have been a member of SAEM since 1999, with much of my experience related to my work with the Association of Academic Chairs of Emergency Medicine (AACEM). I have served on the executive board of that organization  since 2014 and was president from May 2018 until May 2019. This experience allowed me to also serve on the Emergency Medicine Wellness Task Force since 2016, the PA/NP Utilization Task Force from 2018 to present, and as an alternate representative on the Emergency Medicine Action Fund since 2018. My current committee work with SAEM includes membership on the ED Administration and Clinical Operations Committee.

If successfully elected to the SAEM Board of Directors, I would first hope to become an influential advocate for the practice of academic emergency medicine. My main goals in this regard are to safeguard protected time for core academic faculty and facilitate resources for faculty well-being. Part of this goal is to ensure that academic faculty have the time and resources to continue to be creative in the fields of education and research without being overwhelmed by clinical demands. I wish to help protect reimbursement for academic care and support novel means of improving clinical operations. Finally, while I have never been a prolific writer of original research, I have had a history of successfully supporting those who have, and I would consider a successful board tenure as one that helps create and support opportunities for the next generation of EM researchers. 

My primary reason for running for the SAEM Board of Directors is to share my perspective as an academic chair of EM with an organization I have grown to respect greatly. SAEM is the single most important organization for representing the academic EM career and I would like to play a positive role in continuing the development of its importance. My experience as a board member and president of AACEM will help me quickly become acclimated to the SAEM board environment. In addition, throughout my career I have had a decidedly entrepreneurial bent, and I feel my operations experience will provide an important opinion in board deliberations. Finally, I am graduating in July with a Masters of Health Administration degree from the University of Iowa College of Public Health and would like to put that to work immediately to improve and protect the practice of emergency medicine.

Ava Pierce, MD
UT Southwestern Medical Center

A PierceI obtained my medical degree from Louisiana State University School of Medicine at Shreveport and completed an emergency medicine residency at Emory University School of Medicine. I am currently an associate professor in the department of emergency medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center and work clinically at Parkland Health and Hospital Systems. I am the associate chair of diversity and inclusion for the department of emergency medicine, the director of the Emergency Medicine Research Associate Program, and co-director of the Joint Admission Medical Program (JAMP) at UT Southwestern. I completed the Medical Education Research Certificate (MERC) Program and the AAMC  Healthcare Executive Diversity and Inclusion Certificate Program. My research interests include medical education, diversity and inclusion, and cardiac resuscitation.

I have been fortunate to be involved in SAEM in numerous capacities. I have been actively involved in the Academy for Diversity and Inclusion in Emergency Medicine (ADIEM) since it was founded. I have served as ADIEM’s development officer, and as president-elect in 2017–2018, president in 2018–2019, and immediate past president 2019–2020. In 2016 I was awarded ADIEM’s Outstanding Academician Award in recognition of my impact on the academic success of students and residents from underrepresented minority groups. While working with ADIEM, I have collaborated with multiple academies, committees, and interest groups, including AWAEM, CDEM, AGEM, the Simulation Academy, RAMS, and the Social Emergency Medicine and Population Health Interest Group. I have been a member of SAEM’s Membership Committee since 2016 and SAEM’s Ethics Committee since 2018.  In 2019, I served as the chair of SAEM’s Membership Committee–Market Analysis Sub-Committee, a member of SAEM’s Diversity and Inclusion Task Force, and co-chair of the South Central Regional Meeting Conference Planning Committee.

SAEM has contributed tremendously to my professional development and being on the SAEM board would allow me to help promote the development of other academic emergency medicine faculty through SAEM. My goal as a board member would be to work with SAEM to make innovative changes and creative solutions that advance the mission and vision of the Society. If elected to serve on the SAEM Board of Directors, I would like to enlist the help of each academy to increase SAEM membership so that the majority of academicians can benefit from the education and research resources that SAEM offers. I will be instrumental in helping SAEM implement programs that increase the pipeline of academic EM physicians and build a culture of inclusion and equity which will ultimately improve the delivery of emergency care for all patients. I will work to increase the number of SAEM grants to help support the development and retention of junior faculty, help to design programs to increase mentorship opportunities for medical students, residents, fellows, and junior faculty, and assist in the implementation of programs that promote physician wellness and mitigate burnout. I am excited about the vision that SAEM has for academic medicine and would be honored to have the opportunity to serve the organization that has been so influential in my professional growth.

Jody A. Vogel, MD, MSc, MSW
Denver Health Medical Center

J VogelPatient-centered care combined with the intellectual stimulation of teaching and research is irresistible and compelling. I am fully committed to a career in academic emergency medicine and advancing our specialty through the Society. It is for this reason that I respectfully request your consideration for a position on the SAEM Board of Directors.

My background includes a Master of Social Work from the University of Michigan and a Doctor of Medicine (MD) from Wayne State University School of Medicine. I have been a faculty member at Denver Health Medical Center (DHMC) and University of Colorado since completing an emergency medicine residency at DHMC (serving as chief resident, 2010-2011). Following residency, I completed a clinical research fellowship at DHMC and obtained a Master of Science in epidemiology from the Colorado School of Public Health. I am an active health services researcher with recent grant support from the National Institutes of Health and Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality to investigate ways to improve emergency care outcomes.   

My interest in SAEM began with attendance at the annual meeting as a resident physician. The novel research and informative educational sessions, along with the collegiality of the meeting environment, was inspiring. Motivated by these experiences, as a resident I eagerly sought active involvement in the Society and served as a member of the Graduate Medical Education Committee, inaugural chair of the Resident and Student Advisory Committee, and resident member of the SAEM Board of Directors.  As a faculty member, I have had the privilege of serving on and leading numerous committees and task forces as well as actively participating in the annual SAEM Strategic Planning Session. My contributions to the Society have included 10 years of dedicated service on the SAEM Program Committee (PC). It is an honor to be the current PC chair for the SAEM19 and SAEM20 annual meetings. In addition to planning and hosting the annual meeting recurrent events, some highlights of our innovations include creation of a novel program officer (PO) event which will allow one-on-one interactions with NIH POs at SAEM20; new research networking session with POs at SAEM20; increased number of plenary abstracts; creation of a Thursday keynote session with an emphasis on medical education (this will include Dr. Eric Holmboe, ACGME, at SAEM20); modified Medical Education Summit content (which will include Dr. Jonathan Sherbino, McMaster University, at SAEM20); webinars for successful abstract and didactic submissions; enhanced forum and symposium content; opportunity for SAEM20 “green pledges”; inaugural MedWAR; and increased networking events. Because of these successful PC innovations, we have had a record number of abstract and didactic submissions for SAEM19 and SAEM20. Over the past 13 years, I have provided numerous didactic and research presentations at the annual meeting and the SAEM Grant Writing Workshop. I have also been an active member of the SAEM Research Committee for six years and was elected to the SAEM Nominating Committee for the 2015–2017 term. I have been invited to serve on task forces to improve the consensus conference, Academic Emergency Medicine, and the leadership forum. I have actively contributed to abstract and didactic review, served as an abstract moderator at each annual meeting, and co-chaired the scientific program (abstracts). Through these excellent experiences and leadership roles, I came to understand the essential role of the Society in improving our delivery of care to patients through education, innovation, and research. Moreover, I came to fully appreciate the benefits of the collaborative relationships developed through the Society which fosters the exchange of knowledge and ideas that help improve patient care. 

As a member of the SAEM Board of Directors, I would advocate for promoting excellence in emergency medicine through education, innovation, and research.  My goals for advancing the Society are multifaceted. The first goal would be to advocate for high-quality education, networking, and faculty development for educators, administrators, and researchers to facilitate the leadership skills necessary to advance our specialty. The Society has played an integral role in my development as an academician, and as a board member, I would encourage and foster opportunities for this same development in others so they may also benefit from the Society’s rich resources. Second, I would increase the ongoing mentorship and collaborative research opportunities for investigators with the intent of increasing successful applications for research grants. The goal would be to strengthen the role of the Society as an influential leader in providing and advocating for emergency care research resources, education, and grants. Third, I would continue to encourage active participation by junior faculty and residents within the Society so they may benefit from the Society’s valuable resources as they become the future leaders in our specialty. Early mentorship through the Society is vital for the development of these future academicians who will carry forth the Society’s mission. Fourth, I would continue to work towards inclusiveness and diversity in the Society’s endeavors and products. The goal will be to engage all academicians in the Society in a meaningful way to encourage the novel innovation and discovery that results from diverse perspectives, thereby strengthening our specialty. Finally, I would work to continue to enhance our relationships with other emergency medicine organizations as collegiality and collaboration is key to our specialty’s success. 

In summary, my excellent experiences with SAEM and my desire to increase involvement in the Society have motivated me to apply for this position. I fully appreciate the many outstanding opportunities afforded by the Society, and it would be an honor to serve as a member of the SAEM Board of Directors.
