    Joel Moll is residency Program Director and Associate Professor at Virginia Commonwealth University. He previously served as Associate Program Director at the University of Michigan, and Assistant Program Director and Administration Fellowship Director at Emory University. Although always interested in education, Dr. Moll started his career in operations, and was medical director at Cleveland Clinic Florida and the University of Florida Gainesville prior to joining residency leadership. He has published multiple peer reviewed articles and textbook chapters, presents internationally and nationally, and has served on many national committees. He is Past President of the Society of Academic Emergency Medicine’s Academy of Diversity and Inclusion in Emergency Medicine, and an oral boards examiner for the American Board of Emergency Medicine. He was recently honored to be named the VCU Health Leadership in Medical Education Residency Director of the year, and the recipient of the VCU School of Medicine Leonard Tow Humanism Award. Interests include graduate medical education, curriculum development, diversity and inclusion, and evidence-based medicine.

    Ava E. Pierce, MD is an Associate Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center, the Associate Chair of Diversity and Inclusion for the Department of Emergency Medicine, the Director of the Emergency Medicine Research Associate Program, a Co-Director of the Joint Admission Medical Program (JAMP) at UT Southwestern and works clinically at Parkland Health and Hospital Systems. She obtained her medical degree from Louisiana State University School of Medicine at Shreveport and completed an emergency medicine residency at Emory University School of Medicine.

    Dr. Pierce completed the Medical Education Research Certificate (MERC) Program and the AAMC Healthcare Executive Diversity and Inclusion Certificate Program and is committed to making innovative changes that will enhance diversity and inclusion and improve excellence in health care, thus strengthening a diverse workforce that will provide culturally competent quality medical care to all. She serves as a member UT Southwestern Medical Center’s Medical School Admissions Committee and is a faculty liaison for Housestaff Emerging Academy of Leaders (HEAL), which focuses on professional development and mentoring for residents and fellows from under-represented groups. Her research interests include medical education, diversity and inclusion, and cardiac resuscitation.

    Dr. Pierce has built a steadfast academic career with involvement in numerous capacities at SAEM. She has been actively involved in the Academy for Diversity and Inclusion in Emergency Medicine (ADIEM) since it was founded and has served as ADIEM’s development officer and president. She was awarded ADIEM’s Outstanding Academician Award in recognition of her impact on the academic success of students and residents from underrepresented minority groups. She has also been a member of SAEM’s Membership Committee, SAEM’s Ethics Committee and SAEM’s Diversity and Inclusion Task Force. She is an elected 2020-2021 member-at Large of the Board of Directors of the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM). She is member of the National Medical Association, the AAMC Group on Diversity and Inclusion, and a fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians.
  • Sara Hock

    Sara M. Hock, MD

    Rush University Medical Center

    Dr. Hock is an assistant professor at Rush University Medical Center and the director for emergency medicine simulation. She completed residency at the University of Chicago and fellowship at the Rush/Cook County Simulation Fellowship program. She is currently the fellowship director of the Rush Emergency Medicine Simulation Fellowship and is a faculty lead for medical student simulation at Rush Medical College. She has a strong track record in her four years of service within the SAEM Simulation academy executive board, including two years as a member-at-large followed by two terms as treasurer. Dr. Hock has helped manage the simulation academy budget through the pandemic and co-organized multiple virtual and in-person mentor hours. She is an active member of the research, education, and faculty development subcommittees. She is excited to be running for president-elect and to continue the excellent work that has been ongoing in the Simulation Academy over the past few years. As president, she hopes to continue to strengthen member engagement through support of virtual events and education; increase broad membership involvement and notifications about committee and research collaboration opportunities, and improve communication with fellowship programs to increase fellow visibility and resources, strengthening the Simulation Academy member base.

  • Alexandra Leigh Mannix, MD

    "I currently serve as an assistant professor, assistant residency director, and assistant clerkship director for the department of emergency medicine, as well as the medical director for the Center for Simulation Education & Safety Research at the University of Florida-Jacksonville. Additionally, I am the Editor-In-Chief and COO of sheMD.org, an online virtual community of practice for women in medical training.  

    I have been involved with AWAEM for 5+ years. Over that time, through my involvement with AWAEM, I have had the opportunity to learn and grow both personally and professionally. As the current AWAEM VP of Membership and previous regional meeting chair, I hope to step into a new role within the organization. I hope to bring my technical and organizational skills to the team in a different capacity. I would like to use the role as secretary to improve both internal and external communication regarding AWAEM activities."


    Dr. Alexandra “Lexie” Mannix received a bachelor’s degree in Sociology and a Certificate in Public Health from the University of Florida. Following her time at the University of Florida, Dr. Mannix attended medical school at Florida State University College of Medicine, graduating in 2014.
    Dr. Mannix completed her Emergency Medicine residency at the University of Florida College of Medicine- Jacksonville in 2017. Following residency, Dr. Mannix completed a Simulation fellowship at Rush University Medical Center and Cook County Hospital in Chicago.
    Dr. Mannix currently serves as an Assistant Professor, Assistant Residency Director, and Assistant Clerkship Director for the Department of Emergency Medicine, as well as the Medical Director for the Center for Simulation Education & Safety Research at the University of Florida-Jacksonville. Additionally, she serves as Editor-In-Chief of sheMD.org, an online virtual community of practice for women in medical training. Her professional interests include medical education, simulation, women in medicine, and social media in medical education.
    Dr. Mannix is board certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine. She provides
    bedside education and patient care at UF Health and UF Health North in Jacksonville, FL.
