Performance Benchmarks for Academic Medical Center Emergency Department Operations: 2019 Benchmark Survey

The Annual Emergency Medicine Benchmark Survey conducted by the Academy of Administrators in Academic EmergencyMedicine (AAAEM) in conjunction with the Academic Chairs of Emergency Medicine (AACEM) provides valuable information regarding the state of Academic Departments of Emergency Medicine throughout the country. This data sets the benchmark standards for salaries, departmental clinical operations, research and educational activities for academic emergency medicine practices and operations. Using the latest operational Benchmark survey, a panel will present the current view of the emergency department workflow and operational characteristics and identify successes and challenges to running an efficient, patient centered emergency department. The panel will present information and discuss the current standards for ED operations including information regarding: emergency department volumes; patient throughput metrics; utilization rates and CMS; quality indicators; intensity of services delivered; research and educational efforts. Benchmarking performance is fundamental to performance improvement: clinical performance improvement, operational improvement or improving performance in research and education.
