2020-2021 CDEM TREASURER CANDIDATE STATEMENTS
Candidate statements are listed in alphabetical order.
Joseph B. House, MD
University of Michigan
I completed medical school at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan after which I completed my Emergency Medicine residency at East Carolina University/Brody School of Medicine in Greenville, North Carolina. During residency, I became interested in education and pediatrics and matched into a Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship at University of Michigan. After fellowship, I became faculty and took over clerkship director in 2011. A large part of my career has been focused on education and educational research. I received the CDEM Innovation in Medical Education Award in 2014 and became CDEM Academy Member in Education Research in 2016. I have also completed a Leadership Academy program through University of Michigan. Over the last several years I have also taken on several other leadership roles at Michigan. I was the Director of Interprofessional Education and serve on the Executive Committee of the Michigan Center for Interprofessional Education. In this role I oversaw the creation of several IPE courses and activities. About 2 years ago, I became Assistant Program Director for our Emergency Medicine residency and help to oversee a residency with 16 residents/year. All of this has allowed me to observe and help as students progress from entrance into medical school through their EM rotation and graduation into residency and into fellowship. For the last year I have served as CDEM Treasurer.
When I took over the clerkship, I didn’t know what I was doing or getting myself into. Luckily the previous clerkship director was available for me to ask questions and to help. I know this is not the case for all new clerkship directors, but even after being CD for 8yrs things are new questions and concerns that are continually coming up. If elected, I’d like to focus on making sure members are aware of what resources and support is available to them through CDEM. Even after being a CDEM member for many years I am still learning new resources available. It was actually the perceived lack of resources that I submitted and presented a Clerkship Director Workshop at SAEM for the last several years and will be presenting again this year. I will be revising the presentation this year to include more information regarding what is available through CDEM in attempt to make more people aware. I think CDEM does a great job supporting CD, but I don’t think many CD know what CDEM has to offer.
