Can an ED-Initiated Intervention Prevent Subsequent Falls and Health Care Use in Older Adults?

Goldberg EM, Marks SJ, Resnik LJ, Long, S, Mellot H, Merchant RC (2020). Annals of Emergency Medicine https://doi.org/10.1016/j.annemergmed.2020.07.025

Article Summary:  This is an article reporting a randomized control trial at 2 urban academic emergency departments to determine if an ED-initiated fall prevention program can reduce future ED visits and hospitalizations for older adults.  110 community dwelling older adults were randomized to usual care in the ED versus a consultation with pharmacy and physical therapy while in the ED after a fall.  Compared with usual care participants, the intervention patients were half as likely to have an ED revisit within 6 months, and one third as likely to have a future fall-specific ED visit within 6 months.

Bio:  Liz Goldberg, MD, ScM is an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine and Health Services, Policy and Practice at Brown University. She received her Bachelor of Arts from Miami University of Ohio, her Doctor of Medicine from Tel Aviv University, and her Master of Epidemiology at Brown University. She completed residency training at Brown University and was chief resident. She completed her post-doctoral training (AHRQ T32) in aging research at the Center of Gerontology and Healthcare Research at the Brown School of Public Health. She has been funded by several federal, foundation, and departmental grants. In 2017 she was awarded a GEMSSTAR (Grants for Early Medical/Surgical Specialists’ Transition to Aging Award), which funded GAPcare, an Emergency Department-based randomized controlled trial of a fall prevention intervention. She is also the recipient of the Paul B. Beeson Emerging Leaders Career Development Award in Aging, which funds GAPcare II and combines a fall prevention intervention with the Apple Watch for improved fall outcome assessment. She is currently leads the Rhode Island implementation of EQUiPPED – Enhancing the Quality of Prescribing Practices for Older Adults Discharged from the Emergency Department. Dr. Goldberg’s specific areas of interest include improving care for older adults and public health interventions to enhance longevity and healthy aging.
