What is the difference between a Wilderness Medicine fellowship and a Fellowship of the Academy of Wilderness Medicine?

A Fellowship of the Academy of Wilderness Medicine (FAWM) is a certification offered through the WMS where candidates accumulate credit through experience, teaching, scholarly activity, and leadership. A Wilderness Medicine fellowship is a 1-2 year training program after completion of an emergency medicine residency offered through several different institutions in the U.S.

Does one have to do emergency medicine to pursue wilderness medicine?Absolutely not. Though many pioneers in wilderness medicine are board certified in emergency medicine, any medical professional can incorporate it in their career.
