Unique clinical or rotation experiences: The high acuity and pathology mix has been commented on
consistently by visitors, medical students and residents. This is the result of the combined experience between two
large training sites: LIJ and Jacobi hospitals. Long Island Jewish is a tertiary medical center with a Children's Hospital
(Level 1 Pediatric). Jacobi hospital is a large inner city hospital designated Level 1 trauma and Burn, Snakebite and
Hyperbaric center. The combined experience at a private tertiary care and inner city hospital care provides a unique
and rich experience with a proven track record. LIJ and Jacobi Emergency Medicine Residencies are the two oldest
in the state of New York. There are over 40 full-time faculty at the two sites. There is a daily Teaching Attending without primary clinical responsibility. His or her sole responsibility is to perform direct observation of residents, teach and prepare weekly procedure labs for the residency. Residents participate in a yearly anatomy day with at Albert Einstein Medical School where one of our faculty is an anatomy instructor. In addition, Chest tube day and Airway day is also a yearly event at the medical school. State of the art “sim-man” and “sim-baby” simulation technology are used to record and teach resuscitation. LIJ runs two national courses, the Oral Board Review and the Manhattan Written Board Review, which residents benefit from. Unique didactic activities: Teaching Attending 5 days a week; Thursday morning conference; Bi-annual oral board simulation; Monthly Journal Club / Research meeting; Weekly board review with Audience Response System technology (anonymous polling system); Learners are given hand remote polling devices that encourage active participation. Learners are thereby given immediate feedback on his/her performance. Results are tabulated and presented on screen. Enables educators to gauge their effectiveness.

with a mentor to complete a research project. There is ample opportunity to involve oneself in original research or to join one of many existing faculty projects. In addition, the requirement may be met by publishing a case report or a chapter review. Finally, original concepts/plans developed to the point of IRB submission would meet research requirements.
