EMERGENCY MEDICINE CLERKSHIP PRIMER:  Manual for Medical Students                                                          


This amazing 24-chapter primer is a manual for rotating medical students on the EM rotation.  It has 21 well-known EM faculty authors.  A bound version of the Primer will be available for purchase by students at a nominal fee from Amazon.com once we finalize the online publishing process.  Otherwise, it is available for free for students and educators.

Welcome to the Medical Student section of the Clerkship Directors in Emergency Medicine (CDEM) website.  The contents in this section are divided into two categories.  The first contains topics, relevant to all medical students interested in EM - preclinical and clinical students alike.  The second category contains topics relevant to the senior medical student who is applying to EM residency programs.

SAEM MEDICAL STUDENT  EXCELLENCE AWARD                                                                                                

This award is made available to each medical school to select a senior medical student who has demonstrated excellence in the specialty of emergency medicine. Each medical school is limited to one recipient each year. The student selected from each school for the award will receive:

  1. One year subscription to the SAEM monthly journal, Academic Emergency Medicine.
  2. One year subscription to SAEM Newsletter.
  3. One academic year Resident/Medical Student membership in SAEM (July 1, 2008-June 30, 2009).
  4. A certificate of "Excellence in Emergency Medicine."

"Diversity in Emergency Medicine" Video
Created by the SAEM Undergraduate Education Committee and SAEM Diversity Interest Group, the video highlights nationally-prominent EM faculty.

Audio Highlights from 2007 SAEM Medical Student Symposium
:  Each year, SAEM hosts an all-day Medical Student Symposium at the national meeting.  A panel of EM faculty provide practical words of wisdom to medical students, interested in pursuing EM as a career choice.  The talks focus primarily on the residency application process.  Casual, small group sessions are also held to provide a unique opportunity for medical students to get their questions and concerns addressed by residency program leaders.  Audio highlights of the 2007 Symposium were created by the SAEM Undergraduate Committee.

Ultrasound Modules
The SAEM Ultrasound Interest Group created narrated ultrasound modules covering common bedside ultrasound topics such as the FAST, right upper quadrant scan, and pelvic ultrasound.

Derm NetAn “award-winning” site that contains information and images of several dermatological conditions. Produced by the New Zealand Dermatological Society.

NEUROLOGY
The Whole Brain Atlas
From Harvard, the Atlas is an information resource for brain imaging which integrates clinical information with multimodality imaging data. Cases consist of full volume datasets in one or several tomographic imaging modalities, including magnetic resonance (MR), roentgen-ray (CT), and nuclear medicine.

RADIOLOGY
EMPACS An Emergency Medicine Picture Archiving and Communication System which houses a database of plain film and CT images obtained from the Emergency Department

JOURNAL SITES

PubMed: A service of the National Library of Medicine, providing access to over 11 million MEDLINE citations back to the mid-1960's and additional life science journals.
Medline Plus:  Health information from the world's largest medical library, the National Library of Medicine.
NLM Gateway:
  Allows users to search in multiple retrieval systems in the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM). The current Gateway searches MEDLINE/PubMed, OLDMEDLINE, LOCATORplus, MEDLINEplus, DIRLINE, AIDS Meetings, Health Services Research Meetings, Space Life Sciences Meetings, and HSRProj.
