The entire curriculum utilizes four week long rotations. Unless otherwise noted above, each experience is one rotation. The Introduction to Emergency Medicine rotation includes clinical shifts, didactics, laboratories and certification in ACLS, ATLS, and PALS. All EM rotations include shifts spent in the pediatric emergency department with dedicated pediatric emergency medicine rotations in both the second and third year. Exposure to community emergency medicine is provided in dedicated rotations in the second year while the third year rotation in the VA ED provides a unique patient population and access to a state of the art fully integrated EMR. Electives include any activity deemed educationally beneficial. These electives may be outside of the institution, either nationally or internationally. Didactics include regularly scheduled human patient simulator, ultrasonography, procedural and animal laboratories and preparation for written and oral examinations. Elective year long longitudinal educational curriculums available in the second and third years in EMS, toxicology, emergency cardiac care, pediatric EM, administration, and ultrasonography. The department provides each resident with an educational allowance to be used for educational materials and activities such as books, journals or meetings. First and second year residents receive $600 while third year residents receive $1500. The department also provides Tintinalli's text, membership in ACEP (which includes the Annals of Emergency Medicine), SAEM (membership including Academic Emergency Medicine), EMRA and the Virginia Chapter of ACEP.
