Describe how the residents meet the requirement of engage in scholarly activity:
There are many different ways to fulfill this requirement at UNC. A resident can participate in a traditional IRB approved research project in any area of interest with guidance from our diverse faculty, who are internationally renowned experts in basic science, translational, and clinical research including regionalization of care, resuscitation, educational, Emergency Medical Services, geriatric care, pain and many other domains. Collectively, they have roughly 100 publications a year with substantial funding support. Another option is to submit a case report or case series for publication. The project can also be an educational curriculum or activity that targets our department, university or community at large. Recent projects include a poster presentation “Urinalysis Reflex Testing in the Emergency Department,” curriculum publication “Engaging Senior Residents as Leaders: A Novel Structure for Multiple Chief Roles,” and establishing a curriculum for intervening on undergraduate students with alcohol related incidents.
Unique attributes:
Our faculty is involved in research across many different topics within emergency medicine. Many are leaders nationally and internationally in their areas of expertise. They are eager to have resident involvement in their projects.

As one of the largest referral centers in North Carolina, we see some of the highest acuity patients in the state. We are a certified Level I Trauma Center, state Burn Center, and JCHAO Stroke Center. We also have an aero-medical and ground transport service known as AirCare, which includes two helicopters and many critical care transport trucks. All of these experiences develop excellent emergency medicine physicians. At UNC we also emphasize personal fulfillment and development. Our philosophy is "Great people make great doctors.” This doctrine is best exemplified by the camaraderie displayed by our residents in their daily interactions with each other, their attendings, and their fellow hospital staff. We strive to have a family atmosphere at UNC which cultivates more compassionate care for our patients as well as happier residents.
