Describe how the residents meet the requirement of engage in scholarly activity:
During their EM-1 year, every resident meets with the research director. At this meeting, they either identify a project in which they wish to be involved or they develop a new project in conjunction with the research director. The program assists residents in identifying a mentor in their area of interest. The resident, working with this faculty member, participates in all aspects of the project including background research, IRB approval, data collection and analysis, and manuscript preparation. To accomplish this goal, each resident has a 2 week research block in the EM-2 year and a 2 week research block in the EM-3 year. Each resident completes at least one piece of scholarly activity during residency.
Unique attributes:
Our department has a very active research division involved in many studies. To assist residents with their research projects, our department employs two full-time research coordinators to assist with patient enrollment and data collection. The hospital employs a full-time statistician who is available to all residents to assist with their study design and data analysis. Research skills are a key component of the residency curriculum. Regularly scheduled research lectures are included in didactic conference.
