Resident Benefits
Educational materials provided outside allowance per year:
No
Unique resident benefits not listed above:
Our four year curriculum with clinical rotations in a variety of high volume, high acuity environments with outstanding instruction is unique among EM training programs. We stress independence and strong clinical decision-making skills. Our goal is to provide you with the ability to leave our program and be successful in any job available to a new EM graduate. Our institution has an independent Department of Trauma that works in cooperation with the Department of Emergency Medicine to provide outstanding trauma care to our patients. EM residents form an integral part of our Level 1 Trauma team. On the Trauma rotation you are totally immersed in the trauma experience. Our department employs state of the art protocols (sepsis, post resuscitation hypothermia, cardiac stratification, infectious disease therapy in the management of acutely ill ED patients. Residents are trained in the use of modern ED diagnostic equipment and medical devices (dedicated bedside ultrasounds, Glide-Scope, Easy IO). We have a progressive didactic modular curriculum that utilizes multiple formats: Case conferences (Adult/Pediatrics, Toxicology, MICU, Ultrasound, Orthopedics, Trauma), team teaching, small group sessions, class specific sessions, journal clubs (at faculty member's homes), simulation, mock oral examination, laboratories and class specific mini-courses. We stress procedural excellence. Courses include: Disaster Response, Emergency Orthopedics, Resuscitation, Procedures and Procedural Anatomy, to name a few. We are in the process of developing "colleges" within our program to allow residents to explore certain areas in EM in depth. Residents have ample opportunity to enhance their lecture skills. We have many educational partners that provide clinical experiences which complement those of our institution: Pediatrics EM: University of Chicago (4 weeks EM-2 and 4 weeks EM-4), Community Hospitals: Evanston Northshore Hospital (4 weeks EM-3), Glenbrook Hospital (4 weeks EM-4), Our Lady of the Resurrection Hospital (4 weeks EM-3), West Suburban Hospital (4 weeks EM-4). In additon to our own Department's patient simulations, our program has partned with the Northshore University Health Systems's simulation program based at Evanston Northshore Hospital. Residents learn to perfect procedural skills and resuscitations in these controlled, yet realistic, environments.
