Welcome to the John Peter Smith Hospital Emergency Department (JPS ED) – a Level I Trauma Center, Stroke Center, Chest Pain Center, and Tertiary Referral Center for Fort Worth, Tarrant County, and North Texas. We are committed to the delivery of quality health care to our patients in a timely fashion. Every patient and family is treated with respect at all times. Ours is a high volume, high acuity urban facility that supports a 480 bed inpatient platform from our 65 bed Emergency Department (ED) staffed by Emergency Physicians boarded by either the American Board of Emergency Medicine or the American Osteopathic Board of Emergency Medicine. Our Faculty are dedicated to the education of Residents and Medical Students. We adhere to the Model of the Clinical Practice of Emergency Medicine as the foundation of our core curriculum and its mission. This document can be reviewed by following the link http://www.abem.org/public/portal/alias__Rainbow/lang__en-US/tabID__3590/DesktopDefault.aspx. We were approved July 1, 2009 as the largest new Emergency Medicine Residency program in ACGME history with the capacity to accept up to 39 Residents over three years. We will introduce our inaugural class of 12 Residents to Tarrant County patients on July 1, 2011. Over the next two years we will grow the program to a minimum of 36 Residents. JPS EM Residents will experience ample adult and pediatric trauma and critical care to qualify them for postgraduate employment in the setting of their choice. Our focus on administration education will establish our Residents as the leaders in Emergency Medicine during their careers. Our Faculty are diverse in terms of their individual training and professional interests. We will actively pursue incoming classes that bring similar diversity to our program. In this way we assure the strength of a unified department as a function of integrated individual talents coordinated within a collegial environment. Residents will have a voice in shaping our world class program. Fort Worth is a vibrant city well known for its arts community. As the 17th largest city in the USA we enjoy all of the conveniences of a large urban setting while at the same time fostering a sense of small town civic pride. The cost of living is reasonable. Housing is affordable. Public and private schools are renowned for their innovative education methods. There is no shortage of activities in the Greater Fort Worth area with which to occupy your leisure time.
