Areas of department research interest: 
Clinical research focuses primarily on improving the early diagnosis, risk-stratification, and treatment of acute disease processes relevant to the practice of emergency medicine. Diagnostic and risk-stratification techniques examined include computer based models, ultrasound, laboratory assays, and clinical diagnostic protocols. Areas of primary interest include pulmonary embolism, sepsis, trauma, and obstetric emergencies. Laboratory work focuses on inflammatory mechanisms of cardiopulmonary damage inflicted by pulmonary embolism.

Describe how the residents meet the requirement of engage in scholarly activity: 
In accordance with the requirements of the RRC, a scholarly project resulting in a manuscript of publishable quality is a requirement for graduation. This requirement may be met in a variety of ways including original research (clinical or pre-clinical), academic writing (book chapter or comprehensive review article), or development of a clinical pathway or education module. Ample opportunity and faculty mentoring is available for each of these options. A dedicated research rotation is not required, but is available as an elective.
Unique attributes: 
The Emergency Medicine Research Laboratories are housed in the adjacent James G. Cannon complex, which is a five-story, 58,000-square-foot research facility. The laboratories are staffed by 3 research technicians and 2 PhD Scientists, all with secured salaries. The analytical laboratory is equipped with a microplate ELISA spectrophotometer and HPLC machine. The physiology laboratory is equipped for small animal surgery and contains equipment for anesthesia, instrumentation and monitoring (computers and Biopac system), and isolated cardiac perfusion (working heart and Langendorff preparations). A third laboratory is dedicated to 2D protein electrophoreses and cell culture. Additional, on-site resources include histology, microbiology, molecular biology, and electron microscopy laboratories, an Affymetrix GeneChip system, and an AAALAC-approved, level III vivarium.
