Describe how the residents meet the requirement of engage in scholarly activity:
Residents are required to engage in original research during their training. This may include clinical or basic science studies, survey studies or educational projects. As part of this requirement, each resident must submit an abstract of their work to a national meeting prior to graduating. Residents who have their abstracts accepted receive financial support for travel to the meeting for presentation of their projects. All others will present their work at the institutional GME Research Day during their senior year. All graduating residents provide oral presentations of their research at the annual departmental Resident Research Forum. Residents have the option of completing a research elective, during which they have dedicated time to devote to completion of their project. During this elective they are also responsible for spending a designated number of hours facilitating ongoing research within the ED through patient enrollment or data extraction. Residents also work in teams of 3 to select articles and lead discussions of selected articles during the monthly Research and Biostatistics Conference. This is done under the guidance of the Division of Research within the Department of Emergency Medicine.
Unique attributes:
Defined Division of Research within the department that includes a full-time PhD faculty for assistance with study design, statistical analysis, and manuscript preparation. A departmental clinical research coordinator assists with submission of IRB and other regulatory paperwork, tracks all studies ongoing within the ED and identifies potential funding sources for faculty and residents. Fully equipped basic science laboratory space staffed with a research technician and doctoral level graduate students. The lab has the ability to support basic science research as well as to analyze biological samples obtained from the clinical setting. -AAALAC-accredited animal use facility with surgical suites and animal technicians for assistance with animal-based projects. Research Associates program that provides undergraduate students as patient enrollers in clinical studies.
