Jeremy Brown, MD, to Direct NIH Office of Emergency Care Research

imageJeremy Brown, MD, associate professor of emergency medicine and chief of the clinical research section in the Department of Emergency Medicine at The George Washington University, has been chosen to be the first permanent director of the National Institutes of Health's Office of Emergency Care Research (OECR).  He replaces Walter J. Koroshetz, MD, deputy director of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, who had served as OECR's acting director since its inception in 2012.

Regional Meetings

Great Plains Regional Meeting, Springfield, Illinois

imageThe Great Plains Regional Meeting will be held September 28, 2013, at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library in Springfield, IL. The theme this year is "Disruptive Innovation in Emergency Medicine Education," and the meeting will feature keynote speaker Dr. Felix Ankel. Registration is available online, and abstracts will be accepted until August 15, 2013. Don't forget to make your hotel reservation early!

The brand-new SAEM Operations Interest Group was officially formed at the 2013 Annual Meeting in Atlanta.  A result of the merger of the former Clinical Directors and ED Crowding interest groups, the new group is co-chaired by Dan Handel and William Baker. Approaching Deadline?

Annual Meeting CME Credit Deadline

The Continuing Medical Education Attendance Verification Form for the 2013 SAEM Annual Meeting in Atlanta must be received no later than August 31, 2013, in order for you to receive CME credit for the meeting.  There will be no exceptions to this deadline: no forms received after the deadline will be honored.

Final Call for SAEM Board of Directors Nominations (Top)

Nominations are being sought for the SAEM elections that will be held in the spring of 2013. The Nominating Committee will select a slate of nominees based on the following criteria: previous service to SAEM, leadership potential, interpersonal skills and the ability to advance the broad interests of the membership and academic emergency medicine. Interested members please visit the SAEM website and submit your nomination form. Deadline is Friday, December 7, 2012.

Request for Proposals: EM Interest Group Grants (Top)

The SAEM Foundation, in collaboration with CDEM, recognizes the valuable role of medical student emergency medicine interest groups (EMIGs) and awards grants to support these groups' educational activities.  Proposals should focus on educational activities or projects related to undergraduate education in emergency medicine. Emergency Medicine Milestones Released (Top)

The final version of the 24 Emergency Medicine Milestones was released on October 9 by ACGME. The milestones can be found on the ACGME website. This document is the culmination of collaborative work by representatives of all the Emergency Medicine stakeholder organizations.

The EM Milestones represent the cutting edge of the ACGME milestone creation process in that it was guided by ABEM certification standards and their extensive database.  Visit the SAEM website for more details.

Robert Woods Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholars Program (Top)

Resident physicians are invited to apply for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) Clinical Scholars program, which offers graduate-level study and research in a university-based, post-residency training program. The program provides scholars with generous funding and involves two years of study, resulting in a graduate degree with protected time for research.  Application deadline is February 28, 2013.  Visit the SAEM website for details.
