Student Resources

Thank you for being part of our Eadvising program through SAEM. This is a valuable service that we wish to provide to you free of charge, however, please do not abuse this service or it may not be sustainable. Remember all of these advisors are donating their time to you. Below are some frequently asked questions.

What is EAdvisor?

EAdvisor is the latest revision of the virtual advisor program. The program began as a means of providing students at medical schools without an EM program a way to find mentorship as they sought a position in an EM residency. The program was well received and the goal is to now open up the experience to students at any school.

How do I become an advisee?

All you need to do is go to the following link: Faculty E-Advisors. Once there, you are able to search for a mentor or simply browse through a selection of volunteer faculty. Once you find an advisor who meets your expectations, click on the link “email faculty member,” fill out the contact form and submit it through the website. Please refer to our detailed list of instructions below.

Note: before submitting a form to obtain an advisor, we request that you first read the Student Resources documents on the SAEM website many of your questions can be answered here before you contact an advisor.

What are the expectations?

You can expect the advisor to provide guidance to help you choose clerkships and away rotations, succeed in a clerkship, and complete match process. Once you graduate or match in a residency, it is expected that the relationship will be complete.

How many advisors can I have?

We ask that you choose only one advisor. These faculty are volunteering their time and energy and we hope to help as many students as possible.

When will I hear from my advisor?

Please allow 2 weeks from the date of you initial request. If you have not heard from your chosen advisor, repeat the process and choose another advisor.

Steps for obtaining an advisor:

  1. Review the E-Advising Advisor Directory.
  2. Once here you may either 1) browse through all of the available advisors or preferably 2) Search for advisors using the search form. Here you can search for advisors based on the region/state you are interested in, MD/DO status, or fellowship
  3. Browse the advisor profiles and find ONE (1) advisor that you would like to contact
  4. Click on "Email this faculty member"
  5. Fill out the "Faculty Contact Form" with your correct name, email, school attended, international program if applicable, medical school year and any other notes. Make sure you state in the notes section what you are looking for from your advisor
  6. Click on "Send"
  7. This will send an email to your chosen faculty member for review. If the faculty member wishes to become your advisor you will hear from them and thus start an advising relationship over email.
  8. Allow your faculty member TWO (2) weeks to contact you from the day that you send the request. If after 2 weeks you have not heard back from the faculty member, then you are allowed to ask for another advisor.

We hope that this will truly be a valuable service for both you and your advisor. Be thankful and appreciative of their time but also be honest about your needs and interests. Remember, read through the documents on the Student Resources page first and then ask your advisor specific questions.
