SAEM Annual Meeting Sites: Considerations for Selection
The SAEM Annual Meeting is a major activity for the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine. The success of the meeting depends on many factors, including its location. The choice of the location for the Annual Meeting must consider the availability of adequate facilities, the ease of travel to the site, the cost of attending for the Society and its members, and social and family activities available at the meeting's location.
In addition, the following considerations should be included in deliberations about the selection of sites;
- The SAEM Annual meeting should be held in a city where there is at least one Emergency Medicine Residency Program. This will underscore the academic values of SAEM, and will allow increased participation of resident members, which is consistent with the goals of SAEM.
- Every attempt should be made to rotate the site of the SAEM Annual Meeting between geographical regions of the United States. A precise rotation schedule is somewhat unrealistic, since the needs of the meeting may exceed the currently available resources within a particular region during a particular year. The true benefit of a precise rotation schedule is also unclear. However, it is reasonable to assume that hosting or traveling to the meeting within a geographic region is appealing to the Society's membership. A suggested rotation schedule is east- central- west.
- The Society should include Canada as considerations in its flexible rotation schedule.
- The Executive Director will work with the Board of Directors to determine Annual Meeting sites.
