SAEM is delighted to announce that registration is now open for a new, globally available Emergency Medicine clerkship.  It is free, and created in partnership with the International Federation for Emergency Medicine and Emory Center for Injury Control , with the world's first free university Next Generation University (www.NextGenU.org).

This course is an introduction to Emergency Medicine (EM), intended to provide the knowledge needed for a month-long EM rotation for clinically-prepared medical students, residents, or practicing physicians.  All components of this training are free, including registration, learning, testing, and a certificate of completion.

There are 8 modules to complete, providing a basic diagnostic and treatment approach to common emergency department presentations through online study and peer-to-peer activities, along with local observation and supervised practice with a physician EM mentor that trainees or their institution identifies.  This course is competency-based, using the competencies developed by Clerkship Directors in Emergency Medicine (CDEM) published in Academic Emergency Medicine in June 2010.

SAEM encourages members to use this tool to transform their Emergency Departments into teaching sites, offering trainees' academic training and peer-guided exercises online, and providing local hands-on training.  Programs can use the training independently, but If members are interested in helping to formally assess and pilot the course, they can contact course creator and EM physician, Jennifer Chu, MD at Jchu@nextgenu.org.
