The 2013 Resident Leadership Forum will have something for everyone! This year’s forum will be composed of three distinct tracks. The forum will open with the “Leadership Track” that all residents registered for the forum will attend. Some of the best-known leaders in EM (Drs. Adams, Blomkalns, Barsan, Hobgood, Hockberger) will present the following topics:
• Hidden Gems: Developing the Leader Within You (Top 10 Attributes of Successful Leaders)
• Talk the Talk: Maximizing Your Communication & Negotiation Skills
• Have A Vision: Identifying and Developing Your Career Leadership Track
• Reaching for the Stars: Roadmap to National Leadership
The residents will then split into two groups for the afternoon tracks: the “Chief Resident Track” for newly appointed CRs, and the “Resident Academic Track” for residents interested in potentially pursuing an academic career.
The “Chief Resident Track” will provide the tools necessary to make a successful transition to the role of CR and will include the following sessions:
• Wish I’d Thought of That: Transitioning to the CR Leadership Role
• Caught in the Middle! The Art of Middle Management (Delegation, Meetings, 360° Management, Managing Up/Managing Down)
• Don’t Waste Your Energy: RRC Non-Negotiables (Lunch with the PDs)
• You Can’t Do That: Managing Difficult Resident Problems
• And The Answer Is…..Pearls and Pitfalls From Former CRs
The “Resident Academic Track” will present important concepts associated with potentially selecting a career in academic medicine and provide some useful tools for an academic career. This track will include the following sessions (handouts are available for
download and printing):
• Is This For Me? Selecting and Planning An Academic Career((includes Promotion and Tenure discussion)
• Point-Counterpoint: All Academic Faculty Should Be Fellowship-Trained
• Mentoring Lunch with Academic Leaders
• Academic Productivity & Research For Clinical Faculty
• In the Spotlight: Teaching Anywhere
• Survival 101: Work Life Balance / Wellness
The tracks will conclude in time for the residents to attend the SAEM Keynote Address by Dr. Thomas Frieden, CDC Director, and the Annual Meeting Plenary Session.
Objectives
1. Identify the top 10 attributes leading to successful leadership
2. Identify and apply the most appropriate communication styles and utilize specific negotiation skills to successfully resolve conflict
3. Recognize the components of a successful academic/leadership career in medicine and develop a vision/roadmap for attaining those components and experiences
4. Recognize common problems faced by chief residents and utilize problem-solving techniques to address issues, including resident scheduling, ACGME requirements, and management of difficult residents or residents in crisis
5. Utilize the techniques of middle management, including delegation, chairing productive meetings, 360° Management, and Managing Up/Managing Down
6. Recognize the various components of an academic career, including promotion and tenure, academic writing skills, work-life balance, teaching and fellowship
